Incison Care??? Oral Thrush???

I had my ovaries removed on 12/16. When I had my pre op no one said anything about incison care & I did not ask. With my LAVH I did not have any problems with my incisions, they where very small & healed well.

My doctor came and saw me on 12/17 and told me I was free to go home latter on that day as long as I felt okay... And I don't recall him saying anything about incison care does not mean he didn't say anything, as I bearly recall him coming in. When the nurse relased us she didn't say anything either. She just gave DH some paper tape & some gause. I was in to much pain to even ask or think straight. I checked my discharge papers & nothing stated for incison care.

DH helped me with a shower on Sunday morning, he took of the old gause and we rinsed the incison off well in the shower. I laid on down for about 45 mins to give the area time to dry and he put down new gause & tape.

Yesterday my incison hurt bad, I felt like I could not get control of the pain. So instead of taking 1 pain pill I took the full dose of 2. This morning I noticed that my gause has dicharge through it. It's a pink dicharge.

What is the best way to care for this? I just left a message for the nurse. I called DH and he said to see if anyone on here had any ideas.

Also anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of oral thrush? I am hardly eating & DH is getting mad at me.

So sorry to hear you're having some troubles.'s surprising you didn't get any instructions for your incision. do you have stitches, or staples? I had only internal stitches. The morning after surgery, my dressing was removed, and I was told to leave it open to the air. After each shower, I used my hair dryer to ensure the incision was really dry, and it healed up beautifully.

I can't blame you for being concerned. It's scary when something strange is going on with your body and you're not sure what to do. I am sure the nurse will be able to give you proper instructions over the phone.

As for the oral thrush....isn't that basically a yeast infection in your mouth? I think that there is prescription medication available to clear that up. Unfortunately that probably means another trip to the doctor.

Take care hon

I would get a prescription for the thrush post haste - in UK you can buy a one dose med over the counter but maybe not where you are ( here it is called diflucan) - meantime natural LIVE yogurt may soothe it and be good for the gut too!
Try lukewarm salty mouthwashes too - may not get rid of the thrush itself but your gums and toungue will thank you.

For the incision...twice a day use hydrogen perioxide on the site of the incision. Let it dry and then get dressed as usual. My doctor gave this as part of his post-op instructions. It worked and I had no problem with the incision.

As far as oral thrush...years ago I had this and the doctor recommended I gargle three times a day for a week with plain yogurt that had live cultural in it. I thought he was nuts but within a day I felt better and the infection cleared up.

Good luck and feel better.

I know that MD's prescribe a mixture of equal amounts of benedryl and maalox to use as a mouth rince. It deadens the pain. You don't even need a prescription.

Incison Care??? Oral Thrush???

Thanks all... The on Call Nurse just called me back from my doctors office. I truely wish I could of spoken with my doctors nurse or the NP.

When I asked how I should be caring for my incision she advised me to follow my dicharge orders, I'm like there are no orders on the dicharge paper work for care of the incision. I told her how the gaueze was very saturated, pinkish red. She then asked me if my incision was red in any area's biger then a dime or nickle, I was like what... I can't really see my inscion very well besides looking in the mirror. It is right above my pupic hair & I am a little bit fluffy so I have to hold up the fluff to see the incision. She said that she is sure it can wait until tomorrow and the NP can look at it when she takes out the stiches.

As for the oral thrush, she asked how I knew what it was, said had it before with a diffrent surgery along with a bad yeast infection. She advised me not to worry about it & not to try any home remidies, that they would check it tomorrow. I explained to her my husband is consered because I am not eating much. She said as long as I can eat soup & jello I am doing okay. Wish she could of told DH that... He lectured me last night for 45 mins cause I would not eat my pork chop.

Ugh... I guess I have to wait until 2pm tomorrow... DH just called & he is bringing my dad back with him... Dad lives 100 away to help out & to take me to the doctor tomorrow.

I better go back and lay down... Thanks again all I will keep you posted.
