Liver Test, scary results

Hello everyone,
After having a ton of blood work done, My Dr. called me in for the results. We already knew that my hormone levels were low, but what we didnt know was that my Liver enzymes were up. She immediatly asked if I drink heavily for my pain. No, I replied, I never drink. Well, Do you take a lot of Tylenol? Well, yes I guess I do. That was the extent of the conversation. Today she calls and tells me she wants my liver test to be redone on the 27th. She said after she reviewed all of my results thier were a few red flags. I am so scared! I looked at all the reasons why my enzymes would be elevated and they dont look to good. I am so tired of being sick. I don't understand why everything happens to me. I know tons of people my age that have never even had a surgery, and they have the nerve to complain about the sniffles or a sneeze. I already suffer from chronic pain due to adhesions. My Dr. is also sending me to pain management, which I am still waiting for that appointment, and a GI Dr. that my insurance will not cover, a $200.00 appointment. Does anyone else ask the same question repeatidly- When will it ever end?????? Thanks for letting me vent and really listening..

Liver Test, scary results

Hi Juanita

Although I've got different health problems to yours, I do know exactly what you mean when you say "Will it ever end?" I wish I had a crystal ball, but all I know is that you just have to keep going and hoping for the best. I know it's hard to try and be optimistic all the time, but I find that the more I can keep positive about things, the less they seem to get me down. If I get into a bit of a funk I find that I really get dragged down into the mire.

I can relate to your comment about people that never seem to get a darn thing wrong with them outside the common cold, and it sure doesn't seem very fair!!!! Then again, the older I get the more I realise that life isn't fair. Good people get sick and rotten people don't....NOT FAIR... but true!!

I wish I had a magic wand and I could make all of my Sisters healthy again. Now wouldn't that be wonderful. I guess we all just have to hope that 2005 is a better year for us all.

Hang in there hon!

Many s.

Liver Test, scary results

Juanita,

First of all let me say, I love that name..it was my greatgrandmother's name and she was a wonderful woman and I was blessed to grow up with her and know her in my adulthood.
Anyway, I know you are frustrated....I ask myself the same question..will it ever end? Maybe it won't, maybe it will, regardless we need to be strong and fight whatever it is that is bringing us down. It is so much easier to give in to it, but you can't do that, you have to fight it and find the answers.
I will pray for you and your family that you find the answers you are looking for.
Please keep us updated.

Juanita :

Try not to worry too much. Did your doctor tell you to stop the tylenol between now and the test?

Heck, what is safe for us to take now? Seems like all the pain relievers are carrying their own risks of more problems. And yet, we need something to cut the pain when it is severe.

Hang in there and do keep us posted. We care!

Liver Test, scary results

Hey,
The scary thing about the tylenol is that I would have to take at least 10 capsules a day for my enzymes to be elevated. If I take 6 capsules a week, that means I have had to many headaches. I guess what I am trying to say is that I only take tylenol for my headaches and I dont take them everyday and even when I do take them, I take no more than two.
It is possible that the infection that I got after the hyst. damaged my liver. I was on several high doses before and after they took me for emergency exploratory surgery. The amounts of antibiotics that I recieved were extreme. But what does that mean then? Will my liver heal? Will I have to go in for another surgery?
For those of you that dont know my history, I will try to sum it up in few words.

1. Had endometriosis
2. went to see specialist
3. ordered hyst. without any prior med. records
4. Hyst scheduled 4-1-04 {April Fool's}
5. 12 days after hyst. infection severe
6. ICU for septic shock, kidney failure, extreme dehydration, blood pressure in 35 systolics
7. emergency exploratory surgery needed, wide open from breast bone to pubic bone
8. fed from tubes and incubated for 1 week, 2nd week still had tubes down my throat. Didnt see my children or talk to them for 3 weeks. They thought I died.
9.Sent home with Darvocet for pain, nurse comes in everyday to clean out my wound, ( I could stick my whole fist in it) lost 25 lbs in 3 weeks from not eating.
10. central line comes out, no more meds. felt great to take a shower.
11. All of a sudden severe abdominal pain, they say adhesions, where do I go from here, I am stuck in a day, or maybe I should just get over it and be grateful for my life... easier said than done!

Liver Test, scary results

Juanita:

Sure, its possible with all you have been thru for your liver to be functioning strangely. Or, could be the initial test was off and nothing is wrong with your liver. I have always heard that your liver can regenerate. But, I'm not a doctor and have no idea if that is true or not.

If it were me, I'd call back and ask to speak to the doctor. I'd want to know what my doctor thought was going on, at least. What exactly are the "red flags" and what do they indicate?

I think you have a right to know. Also, you might want to clarify the "lot of tylenol"comment with her. 6 a week is not a lot. If she did not ask how many, you need to say so, as you might get misdiagnosed, otherwise.

Hang in there. You've had it rough and you deserve a break!!

Liver Test, scary results

THERE ARE MANY POSSIBLE REASONS YOUR LIVER ENZYMES MAY BE ELEVATED. MORE TESTING IS A GOOD IDEA. A GI SPECIALIST IS ALSO A VERY GOOD IDEA. FOLLOW WHAT YOUR GI SPECIALIST SAYS.
QUESTIONS TO INCCUDE ARE:
WHICH ENZYMES ARE HIGH?
HOW ELEVATED ARE THEY?
IF BLOOD TESTS SHOW SAME RESULTS, WHAT IS NEXT?

YOU MAY NEED ULTRA SOUND AND/OR CT SCAN OF LIVER.
AND IT MAY TURN OUT TO BE SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE TREATMENT. IT MAY BE SOMETHING THAT JUST HAS TO BE WATCHED. IT MAY BE SOMETHING THAT CAN BE TREATED SIMPLY.

AGAIN, IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE THIS WORKED UP BY A GI SPECIALIST.
KEEP US POSTED.

Liver Test, scary results

Juanitar...I also received a referral to a Gastroenterologist/Endocrinologist for multicystic liver disease. At first they drew blood work to test LFT's (liver function test), and did an USN of abdomen. I found that Dr to be extremely knowledgeable and professional. Good that your Dr did these tests and saw these red flags early. Liver is one of the organs that regenerates so that is good. Had a friend that got a big wake up call after years of alcohol abuse, he developed a viral infection that attached his liver. After treatment and close monitoring his liver is fine. He was actually on a transplant list. Just wanted to give you an extreme example. The liver is closely related to the gall bladder, and spleen. The GI Drs have to be so smart in this area, there is so many bodily functions that work together. I also had to wait several months to see them. What I found out on the internet scared me to death, and as it turned out for me, my condition was probably hereditary and will just be monitored every 6 months. I did stop drinking which basically entails giving up my occasional glass of wine. Oh well. Best of luck to you.

Liver Test, scary results

Go on with your liver tests. Sounds like you've had a lot of very powerful drugs put in your system. The liver is the body's detoxifier, and it could be that your body is overloaded -- in which case very little tylenol could push it over the edge and cause you to get bad test results. If you don't get any real answers from your current docs, find a physician who knows and understands nutritional therapies and alternative medicine, preferably an MD or DO. Although some DCs are very good also.

I would also recommend eating fresh, organic produce, and clean foods. Stay away from all chemical additives -- esp MSG, and artificial sweeteners like aspartame and splenda. These are toxic and put a strain on the liver and kidney's abilitlies to do their job and detoxify the body. Be kind to your body, and to your liver right now. Don't overtax it!

Your liver may simply be overloaded, but you still need a docs help to cleanse and restore it properly. You could also need some supplements, but again, you need a professional's help in this matter.

Been there.
