Ovaries or not with PCOS

I am scheduled for an abdominal on January 10th due to heaving bleeding for extended periods of time as well as irregular cycles. I have had Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome since I was 24. I am now 33. My ovaries are very painful. I also have a history of blood clots in my legs. I am struggling with the decision to take or leave my ovaries. One side wants them gone because of all of the pain. I worry about HRT with my history of blood clots. The other side says leave them in for the hormones. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!

I'm sorry I don't have a magic answer for you. I would talk to my doctor about the pros and cons as they apply to you. It is a tough decision and one that only you can make. I wish you the very best with your decision and your surgery! s

Get multiple opinions. Even if you "trust" your doctor. Sometimes they are coming from different philosophies. The blood clots in your legs may mean you can't take hormones. If you are premenopausal that might be a problem. If it means rescheduling - so be it. This is elective surgery. It is not reversible. Take your time. This is a serious decision.

Ovaries or not with PCOS

I had a TAH/BSO 15mo's. ago for PCOS/Endo. My ovaries were not functioning and caused alot of pain. I was 33 yrs. old. I am fortunate that I am able to take HRT. I take Premarin 1.25mg and have had no problems with it. I started it 2.5 weeks out from surgery. My hormones were so out of whack prior to surgery that I must admit---I do much better on HRT!!!

It is all so individualized and you should really have discissions with your surgeon and possibly second opinions!!!

Here is a REAL good thread about PCOS!!! The post from StampinCat, a former Hostess here, is FULL of VALUABLE information!!!!!

I hope you find the answers you are searching for!!!

Ovaries or not with PCOS

I had my surgery on the 15th for endo and pcos. I had both ovaries removed. I have to agree with bridges, I have been doing better over this amount of time with the HRT than I did before. The mood swings were worse before, as well as the other discomforts from my ovaries. While I'm not healed yet, and still dealing with some surgery pain, emotionally I feel better. I'm taking Cenestin 0.625mg and it's been good. I have some night sweats and some hot flashes, but noting untollerable. It's a personal desicion, but for me I decided to have them both removed because I didn't want to have to face the posibility of having another surgery somewhere down the road to remove them. Good luck, and make sure you talk to your doctor, just remember no question should go unasked.
