I have some ???? Hope someone can help

Hi Ladies,

I had my abdominal hysterectomy and bladder surgery 3 weeks ago. My cervix was removed but ovaries left intact.
I feel like the past 3 weeks I have been obsessed with bodily functions. I am taking colace which is a stool softener daily.
One day I will be living in the bathroom, full of gas, and have several small bowel movements through out the day. I also started with hemmoroids. The next day I am ok with no bowel movement. Day 3 starts with all above problems again.
Today the pain is so severe that I find I can hardly function.
I am concerned if I don't take the Colace, I won't be able to move bowels but maybe the colace is contributing to these awful pains.
Any opinions appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your pain.

I have not taken Colace. I am four weeks along and am having normal BM's. The first week, I took Magnolax and drank prune juice regularly to get things moving. Gradually, I weaned myself from these in order for my bowel to "think" on it's own.

Depending on your diet, you should be getting back to normal in terms of movements. Could you try to cut back on the colace or replace it with something gentler like Milk of Magnesia and prune juice? Also add some more fiber to your diet, like fruit, veggies and high fiber cereal?

I was afraid of getting dependant on laxatives and gave myself a week. After that, I weaned.

Hope you can resolve this. As always, if you are in terrible pain and can't seem to cope, you must contact your doctor!

Hugs,
Sarah

Hi there

I think you should give your doctor a ring. He's there for all these types of postop problems. It sounds to me like you're actually getting worse, especially regarding the pain. Good luck.

Hi jskmsss

Sorry you're so miserable. I know....
and no pain meds will touch that, either.
I'd suggest sending somebody out for Gas-X, it helps alot.
I was using a stool softener called Surfak (otc) and it was twice a day, not harsh at all.
Try not to have long sessions, and try not to strain, just use gravity. Hot coffee (probably especially if you don't normally drink it) works really well.
I found I was in abject pain if I didn't go every day, so I'm not surprised that you feel awful.
I agree yours sounds more severe than most sisters report at 3 weeks out, and I'd give the Doc a call if I were you.
Just know that this part doesn't last all that long - I hope it'll be over soon for you too.

Hi Jsk,
Welcome to my world!! I am 13 weeks, still take 3 colace and 2 metamucil a day...If I dont I would just plug up and explode. Mind you some days i feel like that anyhow. I was told not to worry about the Colace. It does not affect your bowels as laxatives do. All it does as it passes through is pull water into your stools. So you can be on it long term with no issues of your bowels shutting down. I worry about being on it forever as that is how it is starting to feel....Hang in there, you will know when it is time to start weaning off. If you are still having difficulties going, then keep it up. Once you start going regularly, cut down to 2, then once you are ok with that, cut down to one. It will take some time, possibly a couple months, but you do not want problems to add to your recovery....

Hugs

I am sorry you are having these problems. Colace is just a stool softener and will not constipate you...its job is to soften the stool up so it can be easier to pass. If you are having all these problems and now hemrroids, you should call your doc, sounds like you are straining too much.

I have some ???? Hope someone can help

Hello everyone,

Sorry you're having these problems but they are very "normal" after your op.

I had my op (TAH/BSO for severe atypical pre-cancerous uterus tumour) five weeks ago today. I had exactly the same problems as you are experiencing. They lasted about 2-3 weeks. I too was frightened to stop taking laxatives but was also worried that I was becoming to rely on them too much. In the end I did stop taking them and straight away I realised that it WAS these that were causing a lot of my stomach pains. I do find that it helps to take a bowel softener once or twice a week just to keep things "moving", but the pains have gone altogether.

Hope this helps you.

Merry Christmas everyone!!

I was using Colace and found it really didn't do the job well. I've switched over to FiberCon -- what a difference! Metamucil tends to give me gas, but FiberCon doesn't. It might be worth a try!

colace and pain

Dear Hystersister,

You may be right that the Colace is causing you distress. Not every remedy works for each person! You might try the herb Cascara Sagrada, which tends to be a gentle alternative to Colace.
