Steri-Strips and a "Stitch" in my side

Greetings and Aloha!

I am new today to this site and have a couple of questions:

My doctor is on vacation during the holidays, so I was hoping maybe some of you gals had some experience with these topics:

1. I am 17 days post op from a TAH (leaving ovaries). I still have all 12 steri-strips. They are just now beginning to peel a TINY bit at the edges. They pull and tug now that I am getting more active. How long are these suckers supposed to stay on? I have been very careful not to get them wet in the shower.

2. The doctor found something suspicious on one of my ovaries and did a biopsy (benign thank heavens). I don't know if this is related, and I don't know which ovary he biopsied, by I have this fairly constant pain at the furthest left corner of my incision. It feels like when you run and get a "stitch" in your side, but lower. Everything looks great from the outside, and it really feels like it's coming from the inside.

Here's a totally unrelated observation regarding "life after hyster". On Wednesday, my husband took me on my first official outing since the surgery. We were at Walmart and I walked past the isle with all the feminine products. I must say, I have hated my long and painful periods since I was 12, but I had a strange feeling knowing I would never need that stuff again (I should have bought stock in the companies toward the end with all the bleeding I was doing). Does this make any sense??? I should look at that isle and laugh my head off, but I just felt strange.

Steri-Strips and a "Stitch" in my side

Hi and welcome to this wonderful website! My Dr told me when I left the hospital last week(dec 16th) that my steri-strips should come off in a week and the ones she did on my tummy on Mon should come off in 2 weeks welllllll 1 came off already lol they said as long as my incision is not open then it was ok.

I had surgery on the 15th started off with a Laproscopy and had 3 holes one in belly button and one on each side those steri-strips are gone thak goodness lol. I pulled off the steri-strips on my belly button in my Dr's(Dec 20th) office and she said pull em off lol. So I guess everyone is different I know that your DR is gone but he should have a back up Dr on call for him and see what his office says about your steri-strips

Steri-Strips and a "Stitch" in my side

It was over two weeks before all my strips came off. I let the water in the shower trickled down over them and that seemed to help loosen them over time. I NEVER pulled them off. Was told not to do that!

As far as your pain, I get those at the lower sides of my incision. I happen to think it is the internal stitches pulling. Of course, if the pain is very bad, I would call your doctor.

The "pad" aisle...hmmm. I remember the old days when....

I will be visiting this aisle only for my daughter now...she is 11 and unfortunately, will be shopping this area soon. So, because of that, it will be a regular reminder of what once was....

Hope your recovery goes smoothly! Take care of yourself!

By the way, LOVE your state...visit it every year...we stay at the Turtle Bay Resort...you truly live in paradise!

Happy Holidays!

Hugs,
Sarah

Steri-Strips and a "Stitch" in my side

Hi, Majel!

My steri-strips did't even START to come off on their own, but at my 2-week check-up, since my incision was healing well, the doctor pulled them off. The next time you see yours, I'm sure he/she will do the same if the incision looks good. Just be sure to tell the doc that they're bugging you.

And as far as the feminine hygiene section of the stores is concerned--I'm still buying panty-liners/mini-pads because of some bleeding, spotting and other discharge. I'm looking forward to the day when I can totally avoid that aisle!!!! (That is, if that day ever comes...?!!)

Good luck as you recover! Hopefully your daughter will fare better than you as far as her periods are concerned!

Oops, the "your daughter" referred to HippieHoney's daughter.

Internal stitches and trickling water

WooHoo! Some great answers already!

HippieHoney, I think today (since I am 17 days out) I will take my shower without plastic wrapping myself...perhaps then the steri-strips will start loosening by themselves. I never thought about the internal stitches tugging a bit. It makes sense. The pain isn't bad, just annoying. Yeah..Hawaii is a great place to live. I guess once I recover, I won't have to worry about not being able to go to the beach certain times of the month (or attracting sharks...ha-ha)

Int'lPJ, sorry to hear you're still having to invest in panty liners. I have been very blessed and haven't had a drop of unusual discharge since the first 12 hours after the surgery. I am sure soon you won't have to worry about that nonsense any longer!

Boy...it sure helps just to chat with others who have
"been through it".

Steri-Strips and a "Stitch" in my side

I'm 4 days post op. My doc told me that showering was okay. Just to let water run over the steri strips but not to scrub them or anything. She said that they will fall off on their own. So I think it's probably all good in that area. I too have felt the internal pull of all the stitches that are "really" holding everything together. .. My nurse said that the external steri strips aren't doing the hard work... they are!!
