progesterone cream for hairloss

Hello all, I am almost 6 weeks post op and I saw the doc today. I asked him about testosterone dominate hair loss because my hair has been thinning for a while but is now falling out in handfulls. I have had my thyroid checked and scanned and it's ok. I read that testerone dominance is a common reason for womens hairloss and that progesterone cream can help. He said that although he didn't think my hormones were a problem I could try it, but he didn't give me a brand or a dose or anything. He just said it's over the counter. I asked about having my levels checked first and he said no need just try the cream if it works it works if not see a dermatologist. Can you feel his concern ? LOL! Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows about this and if they know a good cream to try? Clearly I am on my own with this as far as the doc goes. Any help would be great! Thanks!

progesterone cream for hairloss

Hi kittenchloe I'm a firm believer in treating only symptoms that need treating, and not taking things that will also affect other areas or cause other symptoms. JMHO, but I'm not sure using progesterone cream overall is going to be an efficient solution to the hair loss problem.

However, if you want to try something more 'local', I'd recommend (personal experience here) a product called NuHair serum. Progesterone happens to be one of the ingredients. It's applied a few drops to the scalp twice a day. Since I've been using it my hairdresser says my hair is growing faster and stronger than before. It used to be marketed as Shen Min Activator, and may still be available under that name as well, but where I live it's NuHair now (exact same product). I get it at my local RiteAid in the shampoo section near the Rogaine products.

I'd also recommend finding a DR who is more knowledgeable about hormones and more willing to work with you to find a solution to your concerns. One way to find a DR who knows more about hormones is to ask a local compounding pharmacist which DRs prescribe HRT's through them. If you don't know where there is a compounding pharmacy near you, you can go to www.iacprx.org and use their pharmacy locator.

I hope this helps!
s,

Thanks. I will consider that too. My lab work before surgery always said my testosterone was high and I read that that can cause hairloss. I don't know, I am just freaking out because my hair is falling out. I am going to get a new doctor. Thanks.
