Help sisters my doctors keep asking if i drink a lot

Over the last 2 years with all my problems i have had a lot of blood work done and each time my liver marker is raised on the one test that would indicate that i drink a lot of alcohol - well I am almost teetotal about two glasses of wine a month!!! yes really, well i recovered fine from my hysterectomy.

But i have been having a few problems possibly arthritis or trapped nerves in my back, so i had another lot of blood-work done and my doctor has just rung and asked yes you guessed it - how much was i drinking these days!!!!! well apparently my liver marker is way up and she has booked me into see a specialist tomorrow, all my other blood tests are fine, help sisters i'm so worried now has anybody else had problems with liver function tests that turned out ok please if anybody can help or share any information i'd be so grateful............

My best friend had this problem.
Like you she drinks less than two alcoholic drinks in a month, her tests came back that she was a high comsumption drinker

She ended up having a biopsy done that proved she didn't drink, but had a slightly fatty liver, with no enlargement. So she was put on colesterol tabs for 6 months and changed her diet.

Now all is well

Sorry to hear about your inconsiderate dr!

When I was considering a tubal reanastamosis (sp?) (tubal reversal) nine years ago I went to my dr for blood work to make sure everything was still in working order after having tubes tied for six years. My liver enzymes were elevated (as though I had been drinking... I don't drink at all!!). Further tests revealed that I had the Hepatitis C virus. Have you or your dr considered this? I'm not sure how I contracted the virus... have never had symptoms. A liver biopsy showed no damage and a year of chemotherapy has left me virus free. This might be something you want to check into.

I'll pray for you that you will find the answer.

My trip to the castle is 7:30 tomorrow.... can't wait to be on the other side!!

Help sisters my doctors keep asking if i drink a lot

Hi,

I wondered that about Cholesterol too. My Dr. has also been conccerned about Liver function in both my husband and myself. my husband hasn't had a drink in almost 20 years and I am like you almost never. Now in the past that was a different story..... :-) I wonder if all the meds has something to do with it?

Tanis, was your Ovarian Cyst solid? Mine was the size of a cantaloupe and solid with hair and teeth and tissue. Ick,,,,,

Dandelion is an excellant herb for the Liver. Whole Foods sells them sometimes in the leafy greens sections or you can find it tea form and capsule forms. I prefer to go outside and find a spot that isn't sparyed with chemicals and just pick them myself. It's pretty bitter, as Liver herbs are suppose to be, so some honey helps or combine it with mint. However, check with your Doctor to see if this is an option too. No side effects from Dandelion that anyone has reported except that it also works on the bowels and bladder too.

Anyway, sorry to go on about that but thought I'd offer it.

Hope all is better.

Elevated liver enzymes does not neccesarily mean that you drink. I think your doc was a jerk to assume so instead of looking for a medical cause. Please tell them that you do not drink like that and that they need to look elsewhere for the problem. I am sorry thathe did that to you.

Did he ask you about all the OTCs you might be taking? I ask because my DH had the same symptoms. Doc asked if he took Tylenol and the answer was no. We didn't realize that Nyquil and Dayquil had the same ingredients in them as Tylenol. He had been taking them round the clock for almost 2 weeks. Once he got over his cold and off the meds his levels returned to normal.

liver damage

Hi Englishannie,
How are things going for you today? I hope that you are doing good....I just wanted to tell you that other things in life can cause liver damage other than alcohol... I am on choesterol lowering medicine. I have to get my blood checked periodically to make sure no damage is being done. I have heard that other prescription drugs can do damage. Put there is also a possibility that you don't actually have liver damage. Your doctor can probably order some test and make sure. Try not to worry too much. Take Care. Sunshine 48

Milk thistle is also good for liver support. The drops taste vile, but it also comes in capsules. I take one every day.

Hi Leeter,
A cyst or tumor so to speak with hair/teeth is called a dermoid cyst/tumor. I found this by researching after finding out that I had fybroid tumors. When I first read about dermoid cyst...I freaked out. I told the doctor... hurry up and get it out....Of course, it is just the thought of it that freaks you out. A cyst is a cyst and a tumor a tumor. Just an abnormal growth of something that holds no purpose for us. My uterus was the size of a 5 month pregnancy and the largest fyrboid the size of a canteloupe. Although I had more than one. Anyway, they were all removed and the surgery is over and I am so glad. You take care. Sunshine 48
