please read!! check ur meds!

i should have died yesterday, i had a lavh 1 yr ago and i have been in constant terrible pain ever since. i have seen hundreds of doc's..i'm happy to report that i recently found a really great doc, who understands what i am going through, but to make a really long story short, he prescribed me some high level pain meds...when i went and picked them up i didnt think any thing of it, i went home and took one pill instead of two like the label suggested (mostly because i HATE to throw up, and i wanted to make sure it wouldnt do that to me). yesterday morning i recieved a phone call from the pharmacy, they had put the correct label on the bottle but the wrong med and # of meds in the bottle. the med that they had given me would have prevented me from breathing in my sleep if i would have taken it like i was supossed to. i was really weak and very sick but i was extremly happy to still be here. i just thought that i would let my "sisters" know about my experience...please be careful when taking meds and double check your pharmacy they can make mistakes to.

WOW! Thank God you are naturally reticent about medications! I never think to suspect that pharmacists slip up. But you can best believe I'll eyeball my meds I pick up more thoroughly now.

Glad you're still with us Ami! Keep up the good work

Thanks for posting this...a reminder that mistakes are made everyday. Know what your picking up and read the bottle. Check the name of the med, doctor's name, your name and count your pills as soon as you can. I've been short changed pills twice in the last 6 months.

Thanks heavens airamathea that you are fine now.

OH MY GOD!! That is a frightening story! Mistakes happen, but that could have been a devastating one to say the least.

Just out of curiosity....what is your pain from? what exactly are you experiencing?

One thing is for sure, you are meant to be here on this earth. I have never really checked my prescription after receiving it, but one thing for sure, I will be for now on. I never thought about pharmacist making mistakes for some reason.
I am glad you are ok. Thanks for the posting.

If the label says one thing but the meds are another, how can you tell?

There is a website called "" that has descriptions of pills. They have little number/letter combinations on them too, and they have a page where you can type that in and make sure it's the right medication. You can also go to the manufacturer's website and check for the appearance of the pill.

And......... ask for a pharmacist consult. A second look at the pill with a word of concern from the patient will do wonders. At that time ask him to double check the pill if you're not familiar with it. Now if I could just be assured the right amount was in there!! I check that when I get home. I also have a drug catalog at home but I bet the site that dadrian listed is alot more current.

Often we are in a hurry, send someone else or just can't stand in line one more second because we don't feel well........but it's better to safe than sorry.

Wouldn't it be great if the pharmacy looked up the photo and description of the drug and had some means to print it onto a label for the other side of the bottle? I guess that's asking too much!
