ok. now what do i do? (adhesions)

Hi sisters!

Woe is me. Ok. We've all agreed that I need a second opinion after I went to my dr. last week and he told me thatmy pain was "probably adhesions, but that he does not recommend aggressive treatment since going in could cause more scar tisse, so take two advil every four hours."

Today, like an idiot, i called him and told him that i could not live like this, that i am doubled over in pain...there must be something else i could do. I was willing to wait the two months that he suggested the other day and get a second opinion...i guess by calling today i was hoping to get some pain killers so i could at least deal with it when the pain gets REALY bad. the second opinion thing isn't so easy with my type of insurance...so I think i was just looking for some PAIN RELIEF. now, he said, "ok. come in tomorrow and we'll schedule a laporoscopy."
My husband doesn't want me going to him, but i can't so easily (as I said) just go to another dr. and now, i am not so sure that i just want to hurry up and schedule the laporoscopy either. i mean I DON'T WANT TO GO IN THERE AND CAUSE MORE SCAR TISSUE.

so what do i do? i think i want my dr. to suggest SOMETHING else. some of you have mentioned supplements (which i have to admit I haven't gotten to the store to get yet), some have mentioned PT and massage. Why is my dr. so cut and dry? it's either ignore it--or put you out again.

I guess i am going to keep my appt. tomorrow--i was just there LAST FRIDAY--but i have started a list of questions for him. like: are there other alternatives? should i be feeling pain like this at 4 months--or no pain at all? what else????

does anyone know....are ther drs. who just specialize in adhesions?

I am sorry you are still in alot of pain. Has your doctor done any further testing to try and determine the cause or is he just *assuming* it's adhesions??? Not all pain is caused by adhesions. If your doctor hasn't done further testing, such as CT Scans, ultrasound, MRI, Xrays, etc. perhaps it's time for a second opinion. JMHO but I think it's best to rule out all possible causes before assuming it's adhesions and either having surgery or doing nothing. It may be that whatever the cause is can be treated.

Hi Kim--thanks for responding. no. he hasn't done ANYTHING other than an internal exam with his hand. that's part of my complaint. he is either telling me to ignore it and live with it--or ok, we'll do a laporoscopy. i was totally willing to wait longer to see if it would disipate on its own...i just really wanted some pain killers so i could get through the days that are REALLY painful--like today, when i am at work and have to put in a 14 hour day (monthly board meeting tonight), but for him it's nope, no pain killers--we'll do a laporoscopy instead.

i don't even want to keep my appointment tomorrow....i just want some pain killers and a second opinion.

I am going through a similar thing

Hi, I am sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time.

I too have been having pain in my lower right abdomen. It doesn't sound like it is as bad as your but has been going on since Sep/04. (My hysterectomy was Sep/03) The first thing my FAMILY doctor did was send me for urine and blood tests as well as an ultrasound to rule out things like kidney stones, cycsts etc. When that showed nothing she said she suspected either adhesions or endometriosis and referred me back to the gynocologist who did my hysterectomy. Within about 5 minutes he wanted to schedule me to have my ovary removed because that was where the pain was! I went to a second Dr. who said either live with it, do a LAP or remove the ovary. I had done some reading and asking questions and it was my understanding that a LAP is a very small incision so should cause much in the way of adhesions. The Dr. confirmed that. I had it done on Thursdays and they did find some endometriosis which they cauterized. I go back to him on the 26th to see if there was anything else. Had I had adhesions and it was safe to do so, they would have done some work on them while they were in there. I was at the hospital for only a few hours and I will be back at work on Monday. It is a little sore but no big deal, I had just taking tylenol or advil (less than I was even before the LAP). The incision where they went in with the camera I can hardly even notice, the one in my belly button where they went in with the tool to cauterize is more tender. I have my sweat pants rolled down below my belly button like a teenager!

I do think that I would ask the Dr. to do an ultrasound at the least first. Maybe even schedule the LAP if it takes a long time to get in, you can always cancel it right.

Also, maybe find out how much it would cost to get a second opinion and make the decision from there. If you are not comfortable with your current Dr. it may be money well spent.

Take care.

Get another opinion

I am on my 9th day post op from pelvic laparotomy, adhesiolysis and right salphino oophrectomy so I'm still achy and swelly and irritable but after months of going to a doctor who minimized my pain and seemed irritated with me, I can't tell you the difference going to a doctor who listened to me and treated me and allowed me the dignity of pain management without groveling made for me.

Think about it...if your doctor isn't listening to you and treating you with dignity and concern now...do you really want that person performing potentially very delicate surgery on you?

don't worry about hurting the doctor's feelings....ask around, call the docs in your insurance coverage booklet and see who has special experience with adhesions, endo or whatever your particular challenge is.

I wish you health!

I agree with those who suggest a second opinion. If it were me, I wouldn't let anyone cut me open if I weren't very sure it was what I wanted. Doctors usually support a second opinion, although I know it can be hard to ask for it. I always fear that I'll hurt the doctor's feelings. But they're professionals, and should understand your concerns.

Whatever you decide to do, hugs and good luck!!!

I can just tell you what I'd do. I'd go in with the questions and when he said "let's do a lap" ... I'd say "I really don't want another surgery...what are my options?" and be firm. This tactic worked with my doc rather well, but my doc is not the type to dismiss his patient's preferences. His view is that he works for his patients and he is there to present options and allow the patient to make the choice.

Good luck to you and keep us posted!!!

I second Michelle's suggestion. You already have the appointment. If you cancel now he'll totally write you off. Keep the appointment and get the referrals for the testing that you should be getting as Kim said.

If you go for a second opinion now the new doctor will say, " why didn't your doctor order testing?" But if you go for a 2nd opinion with results that doctor can better form an opinion.

Don't give up, don't give in. No more surgery until more testing is done!
