12 weeks today, still feel it

Mostly I feel pretty darn good. I had no idea the fibroid was sucking so much energy out of me.

But I still feel the effects of surgery. I'm starting to wonder if I didn't just trade one bad thing for another? Not that I'd ever want the gushing blood days back, but I still have days where I feel swolen. It's not like I look huge, but I just feel swolen.

I still have days where I feel that heaviness inside. Sometings the gas pains, too. The little pain on the right like a side stitch comes by every now and then, too.

And so far I've only attempted sex twice. I've gotten so sore afterwards. Not the immediate internal areas, but my abdomen gets sore and the swelly belly comes back.

Finally, I sort of feel depressed about life. When I was home from work life seemed so calm and relaxed. It is nice to have something to do during the day now, but I get nagging feelings that life is passing by in a blur, a void, because all I do is stare at a computer screen.

No point to this. I just hope I am normal.

3 months post sugery

I am writing to you as I am in the same boat. I am 3 months post op and I am still having difficulties. I thought I would sail through this experience as I am a very fit and atheletic 51 year old. I play tennis twice a week and golf 3 days a week I also walk an hour per day so I am not a couch potatoe. I was going really well until the fifth week when I went up to the golf club and moved a table which pulled on my stomach and I had pain for the next 3 weeks I had my 6 week check up and the specialist said I was progressing nicely and said I could go back to golf after Christmas which I did and the week after doing so had the same pain back in my left side so I have been back to my GP and he sent me off to have a scan which I am now awaiting the results of. So apparently it isn't as easy or simple as I first thought. I have posted a thread on the message board and I am waiting for someone in the same situation to reply. I hope this information is beneficial to you MBee

12 weeks today, still feel it

Hi,

I know the feeling, I'm 12weeks post op and felt better the 1st few weeks after my op. Week 6 I was diagnosed with rhuematoid arthritis although I must admit I think it has something to do with HRT as before my op I was on Zoladex injections as well as HRT and things went downhill from there but they are insisting it's arthritis and because I've been given new meds to take I have to come off the old ones and boy are my joints bad and because of this I haven't been signed off for work as my job involves heavy lifting. I'm hoping to persuade my doc to let me go back as I've been good and realised because of my job I wouldn't be going back before 12weeks (English sister) so I was ok with that but 4 more weeks will kill me. I'm starting to feel very depressed and very weepy. Help!!!

Sounds like I could have written your post. Just wanted to say hi and let you know you are not alone!
I'm glad you pointed out the bright side....at least we're not bleeding to death anymore!!! And the energy sucking fibroid(s) who Knew? I've lost that dragged out feeling! I guess there are a lot of good things about having had the surgery. I sure am looking forward to total recovery ....it is scary sometimes when I start thinking will this ever end?!!

Soini,

I can relate to your comment about life being more calm and relaxed when you were away from work! I've had feelings of being overwhelmed this past couple of weeks... Also the "blahs". The challenge for me is to find that quiet inner place. I'm thinking that I don't want to be so busy and stressed; it may require saying "no" to more things.

I still have the occasional swelly-belly feeling, but less frequently. (No sympathy from anyone, as I am thin!)

I have really had a very good recovery, so when I have those days of little stitch pains or pressure, I look at how far I've come. It took me a solid year to recover from a most severe ankle sprain--so I'm thinking maybe it could be a year before I'm completely back to normal after the TAH.

Time off work seemed to awaken a sense of life being a lot bigger than work... I don't know if that makes sense or not! Perspective. Returning to work, I saw how some have their entire self invested in that one area, and that is not right for me.

Enough rambling! Wishing you the best as you continue to recover.

Thank you. I appreciate all your comments.

How is sex? So many people on this board can't wait, jump in and report happy results. I've only tried it twice and the abdominal pain the next day is no fun. The penetration doesn't cause pain, it's the moving around that seems to. I feel all raw again.

Hi Soini,
Glad you posted. I'm feeling the same way. I wish the healing process was over.

Still trying to get the hormones under control and I have a pain about 1 1/2 inches under my belly button and no one knows what is causing it. It seems to hurt more with the lower dose hrts but my CNM won't raise the dose, but I'm glad I'm not alone in how I am doing in the healing process.

Just a few weeks past you, and have the same issues.

Sore, swollen belly if I do too much, so I don't. I go to work, come home nap, eat and rest.

Divide the chores among others, and I do some on weekends when I am not working. But honestly, it takes a lot out of us to heal. And my DR said...6 months til you feel better and a year til you are back to normal. Many, including my best friend who is a Physicians Asst and had this surgery last year say the same thing.

Walk, walk and walk. It is the best and easiest exercise. Rest, rest and rest. Your body is still healing.

If you hurt, you did too much. As for sex, yep, ok inside, but oh my belly hurts, so put on hold for a few more weeks. I know all parts are working, but not worth the belly pain.

Slow down, and listen to that body.

Soini,

Thanks for starting this thread. I thought I was the only one.

Like you, my energy is great for the most part, but am still sore and after doing stuff around the house today, I actually hurt again. When I saw the doc at the beginning of the month, he said the soreness/pain was normal and not to worry. Thought that it would be history by this time. Live and learn I quess.

By the way, never thought I would like sitting around the house for several weeks, but like you, find that I miss that time!

About the energy thing. Before surgery I mentioned to the doctor that I hadn't been feeling well, and he said that it wasn't related to the fibroid (I didn't have a lot of bleeding). Whether he agrees or not, I feel TONS better now than I have for months!! He can't tell me it wasn't having an effect!

Hope you start feeling better soon. I think some feelings of being down might be a "side effect" of going back to work.

Soini,

Regarding sex... I haven't had any soreness--but I still get sore when I do something different, like when I went back to exercise for the first time (and the soreness lasted for a couple of days), or when I was lugging baggage for my trip a couple of weeks ago. So maybe sex is just using the ab muscles in a different way?
