Am I Right, After Hyst No Pap Test Anymore?

My doctor said what Shashi said. No pap (only for cervix). But...every year for a visual and digital exam for other conditions and/or cancer of the vagina. Also...annual beast exam.

Shireen...many other sisters who had their hysterectomies months and years ago post on, "the road less traveled" forum. One of many places to go for support here on site. Their current problems maynot be directly related to their surgery, but they like yourself are not feeling good enough. This option you will find on the message boards menu.

I hope you find some answers soon.

Follow what your doctor says. Of course, because I have cervical cancer, after my hysterectomy you will have to lock the doctor's front door to keep me from having vaginal vault smears and colposcopy. I will be there as often as I can.

I know many people hate having pap smears, but vaginal vault smears could be considered pretty important even if you have never had CIN/cancer. Vaginal cancer/VIN is uncommon, but may be easy to detect via pap in it's precancerous stage, whereas there may be no symptoms or other way of you knowing you have it until it is advanced. Do what you will, or what you have been advised if you are happy with that. But if I was you, I would still get a vault smear (but I am biased!)

Am I Right, After Hyst No Pap Test Anymore?

In looking at the varied responses, it's apparent that this is a widely disputed topic among our medical professionals

I had a TAH/BSO. My said that since there is no "magic line" that separates cervical and vaginal tissue, there is never a 100% guarantee that all cervix cells were removed, UNLESS you submit to a second procedure which shortens the vagina by several millimeters. He insists on annual PAPs until age 50, then none if everything has been "normal". I was at my general practioner's office for a physical on Friday and asked him the same question, without telling him what the GYN doc had said. His response was exactly the same.

Only your doctor knows what's necessary for you based on past medical history, and other health issues.

I have found that GP's are not exactly experts when it comes to gynecology. I went to two of them and asked both about viewing my ovaries and they both gave me a blank stare. The gyn I went to did do this during the exam.

There's a lot of debate about PAP's after hysterectomy. My insurance pays for it (it's a cheap test) and my doctor recommends it becauue the cells in the vagina are similar to the cervix and therefore the test CAN detect vaginal cancer. In fact, this is how vaginal cancer is usually diagnosed.

Just to clarify, here is the statement on the position of Pap tests after hysterectomy from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (it is the ACOG who makes all of the recommendations on these types of matters):

Hysterectomy -- Women who have had a hysterectomy with removal of the cervix for benign reasons and with no history of abnormal or cancerous cell growth may discontinue routine cytology testing. Women who have had such a hysterectomy but who have a history of abnormal cell growth (classified as CIN 2 or 3) should be screened annually until they have three consecutive, negative vaginal cytology tests; then they can discontinue routine screening.
Here is the link to the website where this information is found:

Again, it is best to discuss this with your own doctor and completely follow his or her recommendations on what is best in your own situation.

Well, now I'm really confused..LOL! Does a PAP or does it not pick up vaginal cells; or only the cervical cells? It kind of sounds like the lab test only goes looking for cancer in cervical cells.

I don't mind the test if it would pick up vaginal cancer, but seems like it would useless and a waste of money if it isn't going to detect vaginal cancer or if it is only an extremely small chance of detecting it. Since that's all that's left, aren't there better routine tests?
