Removal of vagina?

Hello Sisters

I haven't been around much recently, but I could really use some help just now. It's 12 years since my hyst, and I have a recurrence of endo, with probable ovarian remnant syndrome.

I have a date for surgery, the 4th March. Not long to go. I've been told it'll be a lap, but that I may lose my vagina due to the endo. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? I have a lot of deep pelvic pain, with a lot of discomfort in the groin and vaginal area, radiating to the back. I've had a couple of episodes of light spotting too.

Pre-op appointment is on 23rd Feb, so hopefully I'll get more info then. It's a biggish thing to contemplate, and I'm finding it hard to discuss this with hubby. We can't have sex at present because it's too painful, but I had hoped to get back on track after the surgery.

I'm 39, so am hoping for a fresh start at 40!

Love to you all from cold and cloudy London England...............

I am so sorry you are having to go through such a difficult experience.
I had alot of pelvic repairs and ended up with a shortened vagina and alot of fear for the future health of the short one I now have.
You might post your question on the cancer concern message board. Shepherdpal has posted about this issue and a few others have too.
You also might do a search about shortened vaginas, and vaginal reconstruction.
Don't rush into any surgery without getting other opinions and doing alot of research.
Best wishes to you.

Removal of vagina?

Buttercup:

I am so sorry you are faced with the possible loss/shortening of your vagina. My MIL went through that with cervical cancer in her 40s.

She's not one to often discuss sex, but she did relay that intercourse was way too painful for her. Since her son (my DH) is a wonderfully considerate lover, I assume his dad is equally considerate and they have found other ways to make love. They seem to be happy together. I gave her a satin nightshirt one year and she told me that he had chased her around the house when she wore it. So, somethings going on with them and they are in their 70s.

Good luck to you and DH.

vaginal reconstruction

I had vaginal reconstruction after damage done from radiation after cervical cancer. My vagina had shortened up to nothing because of scar tissue. My gyn/onc sent me to a plastic surgeon and I worked with a plastic surgeon using several different techniques until I finally had the surgery. I was 36 when I had mine reconstructed. Like cow32323 mentioned, they can build a vagina for a transsexual so they can build one for you. There are several different methods. They can take the tissue from your inner thigh, your intestines just to name a couple. Mine works great and I can still orgasm. After I had my surgery the surgeon asked me to talk to another of his patients who was born without a vagina and tell her what the surgery was like because she was scheduled for the surgery. There are options available to you. Please look into it. You can feel free to e-mail me. Best of luck to you. I am sorry you are faced with this. I hope it all works out well for you.

Removal of vagina?

Have you ever had excision surgery? I know you will do whatever you can to save your vagina. An experianced specialist should be able to cut out all the endo even vaginal.
There is a great message borad that deals excusivly with endo, you may find help there:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/erc/

Also, this site has great info about excision surgery:
www.endometriosistreatment.org
I have ORS too and it really is VERY painful, I am also 39.

Removal of vagina?

Buttercup,

If you have a doctor telling you he might need to remove your vagina due to endometriosis, then RUN to another doctor!!

Having cancer damage your vagina is one thing but endometriosis is not a reason to reduce or remove a vagina.

Estrogen is the "food" for endometriosis. I have had Stage IV endo 2 x's. After the first occurance, my reproductive endocrinologist gave me an injection of Depro Lupron every month for six months in order to starve my body of estrogen. It was indeed a very difficult time to be instantly thrown into medical menopause, but it did give me 10 more years of being free from endometriosis.

Buttercup, I want you to go to the site ..... www.endometroisiszone.org and see if you can find an doctor in your area that is specialized in endometrosis. If nothing else, you could send a copy of your records, tests, etc. to a specialist for a consult before you make any decisions.

Let me know what you find!

Removal of vagina?

Did you really get a vaginal reconstruction? Is it really possible? My vagina has been shortened to 3-4 centemeters and I hope they can do something. at least i have a patient kind husband. The doc said he could take skin from my bottom, both sides. I am needing a little encouragement from someone who has been there.
thanks, Sheila

Removal of vagina?

Hi there, I have recurring vaginal adenosis with no DES exposure and vaginal endo, so removal of the vagina is something I have disussed with my doctor. The vagina usually is not the only thing removed, often the bladder goes too. Reconstruction is possible, they use part of your intestines (I am sure I remember that correctly, but I was FREAKING during this consult). I was told the reconstructed vagina would work just like the old one, but not a lot of doctors cared to do the surgery. I agree that removing the vagina for endo seems extreme, it can be lasered off the vaginal surface at least! I have problems with sex, but removing my vagina IMHO is not going to fix that, so I suck up the pain. Get at least two more opinions, and I will keep you in my prayers.
