This may seem like a strange question...but

OK...I get the basic idea...LAVH...uterus, ovaries, tubes, cervix...all out...gone forever...but....

What happens to everything that's left? I mean, I know this sounds silly, but is there just a space...a void...a hole? I know that the cervix is inside...but if it's gone...what do they do? Can't just have an empty space leading to the outside.

Hmmmmm....

I have wondered this too. I guess its just an empty space. Wouldnt it get infected easily?

This may seem like a strange question...but

From what I understand if the cervix is removed the vaginal wall is sewn together and a cuff is made at the top. No medical proof just what my DR explained to me when informing he was also going to take my cervix.
Hope this helps. You should probably call your DR and ask him though.

Amra is right. The cervix is replaced by the vaginal cuff.

This may seem like a strange question...but

I asked my doc that exact question. He said when all is removed there is a cuff, the way he described it to me was to think of the cuff of a sock( I know- weird analagy) but he sews that cuff up, so there is not a gaping hole as you describe, the cervix is shortened with the cuff on top.
I also asked him about the space that was left with taking everything out, and he told me to go to the grocery store, and take 2 potatoes out of the bottom of the bag, and see what happens with the rest of the potatoes, they fall slowly down to take up the space that the others were taken out of. He says this is true with our organs too, they slowly move and shift until all the space is again taken up. Hope this helps in some small way

snickers that was a great way to describe what happens to the space! The other organs just move slightly to take up a bit more room. The top of the vagina is stitched shut where the cervix was, just like a sock!
