Fever Post-Op

I had my LSH on Jan 24th. I also had a hydrodystension/cystoscopy and ovarian drilling for PCOS. I stayed in hospital until the evening of the 25th, when I was ok with going home. My bp was running low (about 90/40 on average) and I was anemic, but MD said the anemia was normal post-op and they pushed an extra 2 liters of D5 into me. I was on IV antibiotics, pain meds, and nausea meds in hospital.

Yesterday, I was feeling great pain-wise, but by mid-afternoon I was feeling flushed, etc. I hunted around for a thermometer and my oral temp was 102.1. This was while on Tylenol #3 and 1 oral antibiotic. I called in and they changed the antibiotic to 2 heavier hitting ones, said to stay on clear liquids, take tylenol, and call if anything comes up or fever doesn't come down.

This morning when I woke up my temp was normal, but then all day it has been up(100-100.1) , even with Tylenol. I am feeling a bit lightheaded (I doubt I drank enough with this fever on board) and my pain is bouncing between a 5-9, when it was about a 1.
I also tried eating a roll and then heeved in the bathroom for a while, although nothing came up. Even having a pillow brace did not help the pain!

Any thoughts or words of wisdom?? I am seeing a different doc, as my doc is out of town, tomorrow morning and I think they will do an ultrasound. My incisions are not infected. I thought I could have been allergic to my 1st oral antibiotic, but I don't have hives, etc.

I am nervous about this AND I was feeling pretty good before the fever hit me.

Fever Post-Op

Hi Dopey-n-Doc,

When I had my LSH, my Dr. said having a temperature for a few days was normal. Sounds like you are still working out the prescription meds. My Dr. said it was important to stay ahead of the pain, since it helps with healing. So...I say....stay on the meds. Sounds like you will work them out.

Also, try to get some food in you. I know I was prescribed motrin and vicodin and both needed to be taken with food.

On the dizziness/lightheadedness, it might be low blood pressure. I actually had the dizziness (when I got up ) for a few weeks.

Best wishes. A LSH is major surgery. I found in the first few days it could be a two steps forward, one step back type of feeling. Just take it day to day with the pain. It gets better.

Fever Post-Op

It sounds to me like you need to see someone. If it was me and I was still running a fever tomorrow and throwing up, I would go to the emergency room if I couldn't get in to see another doctor.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Fever Post-Op

I think you need to see someone. Also if you are on a fever med and antibiatics and your temp is between 100 and 101 for over 24 hours that seems alittle high. You may need some more IV antibiatics ,plus I bet your fluid levels are low from getting sick.

Fever Post-Op

I agree that you should see someone. Spent a week in the hospital last spring with a post-op infection and have a healthy respect for how fast an infection can develop even when taking oral antibiotics.

DRs at the ER can draw blood to check your white cell count and culture the infection if there is drainage. Consider that you may also need IV antibiotics.

This is not medical advice, but my good intentioned muddling based on personal experience.

I also think you need to see someone. 1 week post op my temp went up to 100-101 for two days and developed a "different" pain in pelvic area. I had a UTI (from catheder) and a cuff infection. Good luck to you.

Fever Post-Op

I ran fever every day for about two weeks post-op. Not all day... and not too terribly high (99 to 100 degrees). I'd just take ibuprofin when I felt it coming on and snuggle with my quilt until it passed. (I'd be sweating within 45 minutes!)

Next-door-neighbor is my DR's nurse (Lucky me!!). When I asked her she said it was perfectly normal and just the body's way of dealing with the trauma. That is, of course, if everything else is going well. I had no other symptoms and no signs of infection. And my fever came mostly in the evening when my body was telling me that we were finished for the day!

I hope that yours too is nothing to worry about!

I'm three weeks out today and feel absolutely the best I have in three years!!

Thanks for the replies.

I had a high res ultrasound & CT scan this morning. I do have an infection and they will likely add to my antibiotic, but not a huge absess as the doc suspected. My fever is down.

I also have ilius, which is what is causing my new pain. Even the ultrasound could show how bad my intestines looked. I am staying on liquids for a couple of more days.

I am pretty washed out. It would have been nice for a liter or two of fluids when I had the IV for the CT scan.

I will see the doc again on Monday morning.

Fever Post-Op

Hi Brittany
Just checking in to see how your feeling....I was reading your story and just thought you poor thing. It sounds like you shouldn't have been released from the hospital when you were. I know it's normal to have some what of a fever when you come out but I just felt so bad when I read what a awful time you've had. I hope your feeling some what better today and that the meds knock that infection right out of you!
Lots of Luck,

Fever Post-Op

Oh, I didn't have a fever at discharge, it came the next day.

After my doc was consulted on Friday afternoon I was readmitted to the hospital. I was on IV antibiotics until Monday morning. I was also NPO until Sunday afternoon, which resolved the ilius. I am still taking it easy on solids, but am past clear liquids.

I am on another antibiotic for another 10 days, which seems to be working.

I am still very glad I had the surgery! I feel sooo much better. I am taking no pain meds. Infections and iliuses happen, I was just unfortunate an developed both.

I am so glad my bf drove the 16 hours to get here and help out! I just sit or lay down and give instructions. It is much more tiring being at home than my private little room in the castle.
