two weird things happening

Hi, I have two really weird things that are happening to me. I had my surgery on 1/14 so I'm 16 days postop.

The first thing is that everytime my body is preparing for a bowel movement I get unbelievable pain on my right side in front just above the incision line and kind of next to my bellybutton. This pain is very intense until I have the BM. Has anyone else experienced this?

The second thing is that when I urinate, it smells very sweet. I can't explain this, but it just seems weird how it smells so sweet. Should I be worried or concerned about these things?

Thanks for your help and support

I do not have pain in the same area, but sometimes I have pain just above my right groin before a BM. Also, I don't know if I'd describe the smell of urine as sweet, but it has a different smell than usual. Not sure what that's about, but I guess it's okay.

I have another weird thing. I have been peeing sideways since the surgery! LOL! I hope it is just some swelling or something that will go away eventually. It is annoying to "go" all over yourself!

Other than that.. all systems go in those departments!

There is a weird smell, many describe it as "not smelling like anything of mine I've smelled before", and it's kind of medicinal. I think it smells like betadine or maybe the packing they put in there that dissolves. I had that too, and there are a few old posts in the archives that talk about it. It goes away, eventually.

two weird things happening

I had the sweet urine smell. I just figured it was ketones or something in my urine. That's how my urine smelled when I was on the Atkins diet.

As far as BM pain, I had it alot during weeks 1-3. I would get the most excrutiating pain right after a BM. It was the worse pain during my whole recovery. My doctor said it is because the way the stool travels down and out, it passes right by where the surgery was performed inside. Sounded logical to me. I took Gas X for that kind of pain and it helped.

Two weeks ago, I had a lot of gas pain after a paricularly bad stomach flu. I took a Gas X pill twice a day for about 5 days. It helped me alot because I was having the same type of pain, caused by the gas.

Did you have your appendix removed? I had the pain you are describing for about 3-4 weeks post op, and my doctor said it was the stool moving past where my appendix had been. That area was still tender from the surgery.
It has since gone away.
Talk to your doc.

Can't help on the urine... sorry.

Hi Tkave,

The doc checked my appendix while whe was in there. Said it looked healthy and didn't want to take it out because in doing so it could create other problems. As it was I had to have 3 units of blood due to a bleeding disorder. She just wanted to get in and get out and do only what needed to be done.

I have an appointment with her again on the 8th and will mention these two things to her.

Thanks for your reply. Hope you are doing well too.
