On synthroid and just had tvh

I had my thyroid taken out 10 years ago due to cancer and have been on synthroid ever since. I am kept at a higher dosage due to the cancer. I have osteopenia already. I am 48 and just had a tvh (with ovaries removed) on 1/11/05. I was wondering about calcium. I just started the isotonix powdered because i heard it is absorbed faster. Are liquid capsules just as good. Or should I be asking my MD about fosomax or evista. Also, I don't know if talking my ovaries out will affect my synthroid dosage due to hormones. Been doing alot of thinking not being able to do too much Thank you

Cathym 56,

Are you taking any form of estrogen replacement? That will be an important factor for your bone health. My doc said an estrogen score below 60 is when a woman no longer receives the benefits of bone & heart disease protection. You will lose bone mass if your estrogen level is lower than this.

Have you had any blood work post op? If not talk to your doctor about this.

Thank you for your reply. I am not on any hormone replacement. I don't go back to my gyno for 2 more weeks. I'm working on a list of questions for her.

On synthroid and just had tvh

Hi CathyM

I am 13 yrs. on synthroid, had a tah/bso, I am also curious how this will be affecting me. I haven't been put on hormones yet so having major hot flashes & etc...but for the first time in 13 years I actually feel like my metabolism is working. I don't know if this is my imagination or what. I'm not sure I want to take hormones but if I do I would like to try natural versus prescription. Will be speaking with doctor on Friday.

My other concern was the fosamax or other brands because I am usually always so cold I feel like my bones just ache all the time. But after researching these meds. I didn't like the way you have to take them. Sounds pretty scary.

Will be interested in what my doc has to say about all this.

Good luck with you decision, it's a big one!

My understanding is that you have to be careful taking calcium when you're on synthroid. You may have to take them at different times of the day. You ought to go to the thyroid health board --

I had my thyroid removed 23 years ago due to cancer, then in 2000, it started to grow back, so had it removed a second time. This time they took it ALL. I'm on levoxyl 200mcg daily and just had TAH/BSO. I'm on a low dose of orthoest right now. I'll be seeing a hormone specialist in March because I have many of the same quesitons you do. I also went on blood pressure medication after surgery as it had gotten pretty high. I will add this to my list for the specialist.

I'll keep you posted if I find out anything and you do likewise, OK?
