Surgery monday/Ibuprofen today?

I've read on this site that we aren't supposed to take ibuprofen before surgery. Interestingly enough my GYN didn't mention not taking any meds at pre-op (and unfortunately I didn't ask). I figured I've been in pain for so long, living a few days without would be fine. NOW I seem to be coming down with a bad headache. It was faint when I woke this morning. It's getting worse as I go. It's feeling like the premenstrual migraines I used to get all the time and I've been trying to start my period since Thursday, but only spotting. SO if this headache starts getting really bad, can I take something for it. Will one ibuprofen (800 mg) cause problems? Is there anything else I can try to take over the counter to get me through this headache. I don't want to have to call my GYN on the weekend and I can probably just deal with the headache if I have to, but I still have a lot to get done (last minute cleaning, errands, etc) so it would be nice to not have my head pounding when I'm trying to accomplish it all!

800 mg. of ibuprofen is like FOUR regular ibuprofen. It's a long, long way from "one" pill.

Please do not take that pill without calling your hospital/doc and getting an OK. Ibuprofen causes thinning of the blood, much like aspirin -- which is why it is not recommended for up to two weeks before surgery!! This could cause serious problems during surgery.

If you DO take the pill, even if you call your doc and he/she says it's OK, make sure you tell the folks at the castle on Monday. They need to know.

Good luck. I'll send you a to help your headache.

Surgery monday/Ibuprofen today?

I was told NO ibuprofen for 2 wks before. I could only take tylenol for my headache. I went to the hospital the day of my surgery w/ a headache & could not take anything from midnight the day before. They gave me a shot of morphine when I was waiting for surgery bec it was so bad. Call your Dr. or the hospital to ck for sure. Some of the headache is probably due to stress with everything we think needs to be done before surgery & the thought of surgery itself. Good luck, try cold compresses or massaging your temples.

Surgery monday/Ibuprofen today?

I am having surgery on Monday as well and I have fibromyalgia and take Ibuprofen for pain and was told to stop taking it for 2 days prior to the surgery and all I can take is tylenol or pain pills. I would definetly call your Dr. and check with him/her before taking it. If it gets to bad you could go to ER and get something or try taking tylenol for it. Good luck on monday at the castle. I am trying to get the laundry finished today and a few little odds and ends done prior but i feel like I am forgetting something. any way good luck and hope thing go well for you.

Surgery monday/Ibuprofen today?

When I talked to my doctor, he told me no ibuprofen, aspirin, vitamin E, or any medicine containing these 2 weeks before surgery. Unfortunately, he told me this 9 days before my surgery, and I had been taking motrin 800 mg for the pain then. He told me to stop, and take only tylenol or also allowed me percoset (prescribed). My surgery is on Thursday.

I too had a headache today. I was tempted to take the motrin, but went with the tylenol, extra strength. Call your doctor, or their answering service before you take anything. Your surgery is soon, and you don't want complications (bleeding). The tylenol helped me (surprise!), but a headache is very different than uterus pain (for me).

I know you wrote that you don't want to trouble your gyn on the weekend, however, he may be able to help you out.

When I went for my pre-op with my doctor two days prior to my surgery, my husband brought up the fact that I was nervous and sometimes not sleeping very well. My doctor went ahead and wrote me the prescription for the pain pills I would be needing after the surgery (Vicodin) and told me if I had trouble sleeping to take one before I went to bed.

I ended up sleeping those next two nights just fine without them, but it was nice to have them if I needed them.

Good luck with your surgery, I hope your headache gets better.

Thanks for responses!

Thanks everyone . . . I'm trying to hang in there without taking anything. This morning I was hoping for just a slight headache, but didn't take long to realize it was a migraine coming on. I haven't had a bad one for several months, but seems that my hormones just couldn't settle for quietly going out of commission before surgery! I'm feeling like I'm going to throw up if I'm up and around which is typical of the migraine. And anytime I get up to work on something my head just throbs! So I've resigned to the fact that I just may not finish the last of the laundry before Monday and my house won't be as clean as I'd like it to be. Not much I can do about that. In all reality, the 800 mg Ibuprofen my GYN prescribes for the migraines doesn't usually provide much reprieve either, but when you throb so bad you are willing to try anything. I'm just hoping this will be the end of the migraines, when the periods go! Thanks all for the advice and for being here!
