I'm home!

Hello all,

I just got home from the castle today (had an extra day stay due to complications). I don't plan on being here long, because I'm really hurting, but just had a few questions that maybe someone post op could help with. I'm also going to post on the bladder forum. Does anybody have input on whether it's best to take the least amount of pain meds and save some for down the road or should I just be taking the highest dose allowed now? I don't know what to expect down the road. I had pretty good pain relief at the hospital, but was getting Vicodin (every 4-6 hours . . . I always took the two) and Tordal at the same time. Today MD prescribed Ibuprofen 800 mg three times a day and Vicodin 1-2 every 4-6 hours. Pharmacist told me today I should not take the Vicodin until I try the Ibuprofen first. Well, I tried the Ibuprofen and 1 Vicodin (he couldn't totally convince me), now just took another one (a few hours later), and don't feel like I'm getting much relief. BTW, I had LAVH with bladder repairs/suspension. Most of my pain is bladder related, but now today I'm getting sharp twinges/pains on my L side and also have a horrible back ache that was here when I woke up and getting worse as we go. I'm going to get off the computer now, but I will check back later. If anybody has input regarding what worked best for them post op I'd appreciate it.

Congrats on being home! Make sure to take it easy. Personally, I would take the medication exactly as your DR told you. If it doesn't control your pain, contact the DR and tell him/her that you need something else. Only you know how you feel. Staying "ahead" of the pain is easier than trying to "catch" up with it. This from someone who hates pills, refused to take pain meds when I got home. 4 hours later I was in agony. Took me almost 3 hours to get comfortable.

Good luck! Keep us posted.

I'm home!

If you have been given the vicoden and the ibpropen and you tried the last one first and didnt get enough relief then go for the vicoden. If not enough relief from that call your doc.

I'm home!

Welcome home new princess!!!

I have to agree with the other sisters. I found it much better to keep ahead of the pain by taking the meds as prescribed at first. Your body needs to rest and heal. Having a lot of pain just causes physical and emotional stress~~not an scenario conducive to healing.

Your body will tell you when it's time to cut back on the pain meds, til then let them do their work.

If you have any concerns about your pain management or anything else, don't hesitate to contact your DR, he knows your situation better than anyone else, although I am sure the pharmacist meant well.

And of course you can come to your sisters for a shoulder anytime, day or night!

Take care, heal well.
