Very hard and red skin over incision

Hello everyone!

I had a TAH last 05-01-14 and recovery has been a success story so far. I've been having the swelly belly from the beginning (no worry) but lately some of the swelling has gone down and I have some very very hard parts that have developed right above the incision. Last night I noticed it was bright red in the middle too. Should I worry? I don't have any temperature and I feel normal... I'd like to hear what you think. Thanks for your support.

Are the red spots hot? That could just be part of healing, but keep an eye on it. If the spots get hot, if you get a fever or if it gets painful, that is not normal and you should call your doctor.

Good luck and happy healing...

Very hard and red skin over incision

I have a 5 inch scar from a ruptured appendix. I remember the site being red, hard, tender and itchy for a while after the surgery. It did soften up over time and turn into a normal scar.

Very hard and red skin over incision

Hi Soleil,
I had my TAH just a day before yours. My scar is still quite red but I think it is just part of the heeling process. I'm confident it will fade as time goes on. I don't have any of the hard spots so I can't take a guess at what they are.

Soleil,
We had our surgeries on the same day! My incision is still quite red, especially in the middle, and the skin under and around the incision is still very hard, and the top of it sticks out further than the bottom. I really hope that it is only temporary, as some other sisters have said.
If the area is hot, or very painful, it couldn't hurt to check with your doctor. I think that it may just be another goofy part of the healing process for some of us.
I have my 6 week (internal..eek!) on the 25th, and I plan to talk to my doctor about it. I will let you know what I find out.

Soleil,

You might be developing keloids. This is nothing serious, it's just the way some people's skin heals. It produces a thick red scar due to the body literally, "over healing" in a spot.

I usually get them everytime I have surgery. It's not uncommon for only a few spots on an incision to heal this way.

If this is the case, it is possible to reduce them after you're healed by having an injection of a steroid in the areas that are thick.

Definitely go to the doctor is they feel warm like an infection might be underneath or you get a fever over 101.

very hard and red skin over incision

Hi again everyone,

Thank you so much for writing. My doctor is away and I was feeling really isolated with this. Last night I took a warm bath with enough water to cover the incision, long enough to soften the skin a bit. Then I applied some Jojoba oil over my belly and on the red spot over the incision. Well, I think it helped and I'm feeling better today. Romani: my belly is just like yours. Let me know what your doctor says, as I'm only seeing mine next March 9. I know how you feel about the internal exam... And Gina: thanks for the info on keloids, I'll keep an eye on the hard spots and see what happens.

Thanks for being there all of you.

HI,
I have been putting Egyptian Magic cream and it seems to heal the area faster than using nothing. I started with myderma but then I heard about this and am using it. You can get it at a Health Food Store usually. Also, check the site on line and you can find where in your community you can find it.
Anything that can help us get better faster sounds good to me..
Good Luck to all..

I've also had success with coco butter in terms of keeping the incision soft and speeding the healing process.

I am and have opened vit. E caps. They took away the burning /itch sensation and help the healing process.
