Has anyone had back pain after their hysterectomy?

Hi,

I'm four weeks post-op from a vaginal hysterectomy. I'm just beginning to urinate on my own, my bowels are starting to work okay. Yesterday I had an asthma flare up and I took my inhalers and that feels much better, but all of a sudden yesterday I started getting a backache. It wasn't from coughing. It was just unexplained. I still have it today and can only take shallow breaths or I feel like someone has kicked me in the ribs. Has anything like this happened to anyone else, or am I just weird?

Has anyone had back pain after their hysterectomy?

Yes, I actually had a lot of backaches the first week or week and a half. I assumed that it was from being in the hospital bed and resting in the recliner. I am not usually resting on my back except for the 7 hours of sleep every night. I also figured it was from the abdominal muscles not doing their job anymore, and the back muscles had to make up for the support. Not sure why the backache was there, but it didn't last very long.

I think that the bachaches and the sideaches ae because these are the muscle groups that we use to compensate for not being able to use our tummy muscles... Even those of you who had a surgery other than a TAH, because the abdominal cavity is still so sore and bruised.

Hope this helps!

Has anyone had back pain after their hysterectomy?

I had a TAH (kept ovaries) on Jan. 19. My back really started hurting last week. When I went for my four-week checkup yesterday, the gyne kept insisting that the residual pain was from the hours I spent on a "metal table in the operating room." I hardly think that one month later, I would still be feeling the effects of that table....Of course, I also learned today that back pain is one of the symptoms a woman has when she is having a heart attack. Sure hope not! (February is Heart Health Month.)

Thanks for the replies. I also think that's very silly about the metal operating table causing your backache four weeks down the road.

I wish I could take a nice hot bath, but I can't do that yet. I'll take a hot shower instead and hope it works itself out. I still have no idea what caused it. I must have moved strangely or something. I did pick up my son once and the laundry basket once a couple of days ago. My son was heavier than the almost empty laundry basket. I may have been using my back muscles to do it without the support of my abdominial muscles. That's a good thought. I'll have to give up those temptations to do things I'm not ready for yet, I guess.

Thanks,
Malie

Has anyone had back pain after their hysterectomy?

From about week 2 to week 6 after my surgery I had back pain. I think it was due to the fact that I was using back muscles that I don't normally use to compensate for the sore belly. I used a heading pad to ease the pain, it worked great.

Dear Malie,

Please call your doctor about this. It doesn't sound like a simple backache if you can only take shallow breaths. Trouble breathing could be a symptom of a blood clot. If you can't reach your doctor tonight, maybe you could call the ER and ask to speak to the physician on call. Be sure to mention that you are only one month into recovery from your surgery.

back pain

I am 17 days post tvh, kept my ovaries and today all of a sudden i had terrible back pain. this is odd to me because yesterday i woke up with almost a normal amount of energy! I have been walking very short distances, up and down the block and no back pain until today. I drink tons of water as suggested by the nurse. My stomach is still swollen to me and i just hope that goes away! I dont feel i have had a normal appetite yet, but i do eat lots of fruits and veggies.
For the back pain? all i knew to do was use a heating pad and take one of my pain pills.

Has anyone had back pain after their hysterectomy?

I had awfull back pain as soon as I woke up,this lasted about 4 days and soon eased, however at the end of my second week post I got a terrible pain in my lower back that went all the way down my leg I could hardly walk . I decided I would call my Dr. the next day but when I woke it was gone
Though my concern for you is the breathing I did have ALOT of back pain, however it never took my breath away please call Dr.

Thinking of you K...........

Has anyone had back pain after their hysterectomy?

Hi, I also have asthma. I had a prior surgery and was having problems with my asthma several weeks postop. Then I started having the same type of pain you wrote about. After several days of being in pain, I went to the doctor.

Guess what .... I had pnemonia. Doctor said that asthmatics are at higher risk of getting this especially after being under general anasthesia.

Just another thought and not meant to worry you. I would check this out with your doctor.
