Any Runners out there?
Boy, what a tremendous site! It has been a lifesaver although my DH must think I'm obsessed with the sudden news that I'll be having surgery at the end of the month. I feel like a bottomless pit trying to learn as much as possible before my trip to the castle! Every spare minute I have I find myself here learning from all of you.
I've been an avid runner for years and do so mostly for the the physical benefits. I am in great shape running an average of 20 miles a week with my long run being 8 miles now. My weight is normal (131 lbs at 5'6") and I also strength train twice a week.
Are there any runners out there who can relate their experiences with me? How did you tolerate surgery, recovery and finally a return to running? How long before you could go for a somewhat normal 30 minute run?
I'm not expecting any miracles but the die-hard sister runners can "feel my pain"...the pain of loosing time on the road. I promise to be a good girl and not get back too soon but I'm wondering if all those miles will pay big dividends for my surgery and recovery.
Thanks to all the sisters, again, this site has helped so much!

Any Runners out there?
Hi CampWomen,
I'm not a runner, but wanted to say hi as we share the same castle date!! I do lift weights and do cardio (as in bodybuilder style lifting weights) 6 times a week. My Dr told me no gym for 6 weeks and then we would talk about it. I also have several friends who are Dr (not gyn's) who said because of my active life (I'm also a backpacker) my recovery would be easier (I guess we will find out!).
Good luck,
jas

Feeling your pain
I am not a major runner as you are but I work out 6 days a week doing cardio all of those days with a mixture of running 3 miles a couple of those days, walking 7 miles a couple of those days and spinning classes the rest of the days. I also weight train 2 of those days along with some yoga. I have been cringing at the thought of being out of the gym for 6 weeks except for walking. But I love working out, feeling energetic and loving the shape of my body so it will be very easy to get back into it. I just have to tolerate some muscle soreness again and probably drop back some weight. I hope some other major runners like yourself give you some of their personal insights as I can feel your loss in the exercise area. When it is something you look forward to every day and is a habit, you feel the loss of it.

I am wondering the same thing actually. I run 3 miles a day. It is my stress relief after a crazy day at work and I know I am going to be like a caged animal without my daily fix. I am one that can't sit still for long periods of time so this is going to be a real hard thing for me. Probably resort to becoming a nail biter or something. 3/14/05 surgery date

die hard exerciser
I feel your pain sis...it will be a challenge to wait out the recovery being used to regular training. I run about 10 miles every other day or so, lately with back belly support because my uterus, fibroids are so darn heavy. I have been an avid bodybuilder (not a freaky looking sister on steroids, but do lift very heavy and like it) for decades and am trying to put on muscle as siting around recovering will lessen anyone's muscle mass. I'm thinking of cutting back on cardio work, rather bulk up as much as possible so weight gain from muscle loss post op is reduced. Yet, I also want to try and work the cardio angle as I'm having two surgeries on the same day and will be under for about 5 hrs. and think heart work will help me believe my body can withstand it. Believing seems so important. Post op when I'm clear for exercise, I'm going real real slow on starting the weights, don't want to get into too much interabdominal pressure. Luckily I also own a professional Pilates gym and will be able to train the transverse abdominal, the one key to a flat stomach-no crunches for me...think they give many, many gals rounded low abdomen and weaken the transverse abdominus...one opinion from one gal who loves to talk training. Love Noom
