Home from TAH...vaginal cuff infection

I arrived home from the hospital today....surgery was on 3/2/05 and today is 3/5/05. I had to stay an extra night in the hospital due to a fever I developed right after surgery 110.0-101.9....my doctor ordered scans of my bladder, kidneys, pelvic area and chest xrays...all came out clear...urine checked out fine, but white blood count elevated somewhat. Fever is now normal..has been since yesterday morning, but doctor had also done a culture of vaginal cuff and that came back showing a slight infection so doctor has started me on antibiotic for ten days. I feel pretty good overall..has anyone ever had a vaginal cuff infection after their TAH with ovaries removed? I would love to hear from anyone. Thanks

Carol,
The vaginal cuff is created by the surgeon, at the top of the vagina, where the cervix used to be. Think of a tube sock, and how it is sewn at the toes, and you will have a pretty clear idea.
(BTW, creation of the cuff usually results in only minor shortening of the vagina.)

Hope that helps~

Don't feel silly. Our docs don't tell us these things and we never see that area of our body so we are often left in the dark as to what's what. I asked what the cuff incision looks like, and he drew something that looks like this >-------< .

I'd like to see a photograph of an actual cuff but have never found one. Curious minds want to know

Take care~

Ok then, I have a real silly question. If the vaginal opening went to the uterus, does the cuff completely close the opening leading to what?

My doc tells me nothing unless I ask.

The vagina stays the same except for the end where the cervix was, which has been sewn closed. (A "dead-end" so-to-speak)
