tummy binder and tummy pillow

Hi all,

I posted this question in the pre-op section because I have not had my surgery yet, but then while I was thinking about it I thought maybe it would be better to post my question here.

I am sure the answer to my question depends on the hospital policy, but did most of you have to buy your own binders and tummy pillows or did the hospital just provide them for you? My dad had heart bypass surgery a few years ago and the hospital gave him a "chest" pillow. It's basically the same thing as a tummy pillow, but it was to protect his chest. I am just curious to see what your experiences were.

Thanks in advance for your responses!!

Jill

tummy binder and tummy pillow

Hi Jill,
I bought my own little pillow when I was preparing for my surgery. They gave me a tummy band right away after my surgery, which I wore in the hospital and a few days after I got home. I also wore it for the first couple weeks if I ventured out of the house for a walk or on my trips to the doctor's. Other than a bit of soreness around my incision, which is normal for such a wound, I haven't needed it in a few weeks. I have heard of others, though who wore it throughout their recovery. Good luck with your surgery.

tummy binder and tummy pillow

I had an elastic binder on me when I woke up in the recovery room, I wore it home and every day for almost my 3 weeks. When I do alot of walking, standing, etc. I live in a tri-level and have no choice but to do stairs every day. It has been a great help to me wearing it for support. I don't sleep in it though and I could tell when I had to get up to go to the bathroom "OUCH". Today is actually the first day that my tummy doesn't feel like I'm carrying a bag of sand inside of it "yippy". It will be 4 week on Wednesday.

I woke up in recoveyry with the binder on. The tummy pillow was just a regular pillow doubled over - some hospitals have volunteers that make little pillows for post op pts. Good luck with your surgery!
