do we still have pap smears after hysterectomy?

I had a tvh which removed my uterus and cervix and I went back to my gyno last Monday for my yearly and he did a pap smear.
Does anyone know if its necessary to have a pap smear after a
hysterectomy?

Its a good idea. You can get cancer in the vaginal tissues, and having a yearly pap will be a good way to catch that. If you still have a cervix, as I do, you definitely need to.

do we still have pap smears after hysterectomy?

Monet is right. My gyn said I should still have yearly exams but would only need a pap every 3 years to screen for vaginal cancer. I do not have a cervix and I think that is the difference between having a pap every year or every three years.

do we still have pap smears after hysterectomy?

My doctor told me 5 years for PAP smears and yearly for internal exams to check ovaries. (I live in Canada so it might be different for you where you live or it may vary from doctor to doctor.)

do we still have pap smears after hysterectomy?

Thank you for your replies. The reason I asked is because I had a pap smear last Monday with my gyno and today I went to my family physician and he said that I didn't need to get a pap smear.
I was confused about the whole thing. With your replies I know now that it is a good thing to get a pap smear. Thanks!!

do we still have pap smears after hysterectomy?

Hi, just saw my doctor 6 week check and jokingly told her I would not have to ride the stirrups ever again, lol. Joke is on me, she told me I would still need a yearly exam to check things out and I guess do scraping of vaginal wall, since vaginal Ca can occur.

do we still have pap smears after hysterectomy?

It seems to vary from doctor to doctor. My doc is very conservative. He said he will do a pap every year to check for vaginal cancer. I did have my cervix removed.

do we still have pap smears after hysterectomy?

At my three-week check-up, my doc informed me that because the found the "tiniest" bit of cancer and history of endometrial cells (normal) on the cervix, that I would have to have yearly PAP smears. I guess they sample near the vaginal cuff because I no longer have a cervix.
