had a hysterectomy 2 years ago and now I have a big belly and my breasts leak milk.

Hi there. I had a vaginal partial hysterectomy in September 2002 and never had any problems really until now. My doctor took out one ovary because of cysts. Since about 3 months ago, my belly is huge and my breasts leak milk. I had a cat scan done and the tech said there was a blockage in my system. I then went to a G.I. doctor and he said there is no blockage but my system is "slowing down." He gave me some Reglan, but that didnt seem to help. I look pregnant and have heartburn to go along with all of this. Please, if another sister out there has these symptoms 2 years post op, please feel free to answer this post. I am very concerned. I know I cant be pregnant, but it looks like it and I feel like it. Thanks.

Kris

Can't tell you anything about the belly, but the breasts could be leaking as a result of fibrocystic disease, which is very common. The cysts are fluid-filled and sometimes leak out through the nipple. Caffeine tends to make it worse. Wearing a good bra all day definitely heps.

I hope you find some answers.

Hi (((Kris))) and to Hyster Sisters. I'm so sorry you're dealing with these issues, such a long time after your hyst

I assume that by "partial hysterectomy" you mean that you've kept your ovaries. If you did, you may be having hormone issues due, in part, to your hyst. I know that, where I'm concerned, when I'm cycling, I tend to be bloated and to have aching, swelling breasts. For some women, this may also include a small leakeage.

It may be worth your while to have your doctor investigate this possibility.

Sending tons of s your way. Please keep us posted.

Hi kris123,
I leak too. I was told it's due to changing hormone levels. I was told as long as it's cear or milky looking not to worry. If you start to see brown or bloody color you need to be checked out. Do they have you on any acid blockers for your stomach? If not, you should ask as it might help the swelling. Fiber might help the "slowing down" too. Keep us posted.

Hi Kris,
When I was going through infertility testing, there was a hormone they tested me for because I was still lactating when I hadnt breast fed in 10 years or longer. I thought she was nuts but she got milk!! If I was in your shoes, I would get hormone testing done. Maybe your body is producing all those wonderful pregnancy hormones.

Hugs to you

hi all

Hi again. My doctor checked my hormone levels and he said they were fine so thats not what is causing my belly and my breasts to leak. I got a cat scan done, and they said they found a blockage. I then went to the GI doctor who put a tube down my throat and said there was no blockage and that my system is "slowing down." He put me on a medication called Reglan which is supposed to help the passage of food go through your body more freely. That didnt seem to help so I stopped taking that. My stomach seems to be getting bigger and I keep getting told that I am fine. I read about the "swelly belly", and I assume thats what it is. Anyway, thanks for replying to my posts. Thanks for the support.

(((Kris)))) I think that it's time for another opinion: obviously, this is not part of normal hyst recovery

Did the leakage start at the same time as the tummy swelling? If not, could the Raglan be the cause? I'm not a doctor, but it seems unlikely to me that bowel obstruction would cause breast leakage

One thing you may want to do is to journal all of these issues, including such things as when it started, the symptoms you've been having, the color and frequency of the leakage and if the tummy swelling occurs after eating certain foods or doing certain activities. Also note if there is a cycle to the symptoms. I find that this not only helps pinpoint what is happenning, it also can prove a very effective diagnostic tool for your doctor.

My sister is a lactation consulatant and Reglan is known to stimulate milk production. It is often prescribed to help a mother increase her milk supply. If the leaking started after the Reglan, that could be your answer.

I'm backing Michelle up here. Reglan was given to me to increase milk production with my last child. I also have severe reflux, so this medication is given to me with each surgery, and every time I start making milk again! It's annoying! As a side effect, the Reglan stimulates prolactin, which is responsible for milk production. You won't find this use for Reglan on your pharmacy information sheet because it is still an off-label use, but I would give very good odds that that is what's causing it!

had a hysterectomy 2 years ago and now I have a big belly and my breasts leak milk.

My breasts began leaking milk about a year after a total hysterectomy at age 27. I was given an MRI and they found the problem. I had a pituitary tumor. A small tumor in the pituitary gland located in the brain. It causes your body to think you are pregnant, causing lactation. Thankfully, medication helped with this and there was no need for invasive surgery. The tumor causes your prolactin level to rise, so have that checked. A cat scan cannot "see" it like an MRI can.
No worries, a tumor in the pituitary gland is not cancerous, but it does need to be addressed, as it can also put pressure on your eyes, causing eye sight problems.
I sure hope you get this checked out as soon as possible and a doctor who knows all this.
