Everyone I have talked to

my list of do's and don'ts read:

do -
go out to as many parties and restaurants and social engagements you want to, right from the day you return home.

try to resume normal activities as soon as you want to - if it hurts stop, you won't do any damage by trying.

do cook yourself meals - lifting cooking utensils is not a problem

walk a short distance everyday - building it gradually

drive once you can press the pedals, turn round for reversing and wear the seatbelt. (not sure how american law is on this one so it could be different)

don't
insert anything in the vagina
swim in public swimming baths (bacteria in the water)
iron
hoover

Hi Michelle!

You are most definitely not crazy for looking forward to your hysterectomy. I was actually so excited to be finally having it done, that I couldn't wait for the day!
After 15 years of misery from endo and adenomyosis, nothing made me happier than the thought of never having another period as long as I live!

As for your recovery, the most important thing I can say is: LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR!
When you are discharged from the castle, you will likely be given a list of instructions. Please follow them. Also, this article is very helpful and is entitled "Allowed, Not Allowed". It gives some good general guidelines of what you should and shouldn't do.

I believe that the standard recovery time is about 6 weeks for initial recovery. It can take up to a full year to fully regain your strength, and start feeling like "you" again. We all heal differently though, and some are up and about in 2 weeks, while others are still having trouble at 3 and 4 months post-op.

As for help, it depends on you. I had my mom come and help out the first couple of weeks. Really, all I did though was sleep and take pain meds, and take little walks. Mom made sure I ate something every once in awhile. Again, we are all different.

I hope this helps.
