Cervix- Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?

I saw the gyn/onc who will assist in my ovarian grapefruit removal this month, and he thinks the tumor will be benign. It was a relief to hear this from an onc!

He did recommend that if cancer is found, they remove the other ovary and my cervix. (I have a cervix and no uterus because of a post-partum hyst. to control extreme hemorrhaging- placenta incretia- monster placenta tried to eat the uterus! ) His reason was that, when monitoring someone in cancer treatment, he would prefer a "clean" abdomen to feel for growths, and that the cancer can't "hide" in scans, etc.

From what I've read here, a cervix is a good thing to hold onto. Vaginal shortening, dryness problems, bladder problems seem to be common issues w/o one. He said all vaginal lubrication comes from the vagina, not the cervix.

He also says there is no relationship between cervical and ovarian cancers.

Any thoughts on this? I want to have a plan in place so DH isn't left to decide this on his own, if it should happen.

Thanks!!!

Cervix- Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?

Maryjo11,
I had my cervix removed in my surgery and have been able to resume a normal and satisfying sex life with my DH. My own opinion is this: Everyone is different, first off, but I say take it and be done with it. I did not like the idea of possible problems later on. As it turned out for me, I needed further care, they never know till they are in there and it is good you are having an onc there for your surgery. I was assured there was not a cancer issue regarding my fibroids, well surprise!
Hope all goes well for you,
Debbie

Cervix- Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?

Dear Mary Jo,

To each her own, but since Ovarian Cancer was more than highly suspect going into my hysterectomy I'd already discussed with my doc that if cancer was found...take everything. I didnt 'want anything in there that could harbor a fugitive cancer cell. Perhaps there is no relationship between OvCa and Cervical cancer...but those darned Ovarian cancer cells could set up home anyplace, and I opted to take away their welcome mat!

Pros and Cons of either decision...please take your time and do what's right for you.

XOXOX
