Anyone else told that there rectum is now in their vagina? Im 12 weeks post op and felt pressure when having a BM......I was told that my recutm is in my vagina...I am now on metamucil and a stool softner and I no longer feel the pressure..Just wondering if this is normal after a hyster. and does it ever correct it self???? Can I stay like this if its not bothering me??? I am so upset about this along with the fact I cant have a BM on my own anymore....any feed back would be appreciated.

Hi Dianescat,

Sorry to hear you are still having problems with this. Did your GYN diagnose you with this? I believe what you are describing is a rectocele. I was diagnosed with a stage 1 rectocele before surgery but chose not to have it repaired. I've also had lots of problems with the BM's still. I take a stool softener in AM and stool softener and Senna in the evening and still struggle with the BM's. Also a ton of water and that's not even to mention prunes, salad, etc. I worry that mine is getting worse because it's different then before surgery. And I know I can't take Senna forever. I plan to talk to the Urologist at my next appt. What is the doctor recommending for you? Sorry to hear about this and hope you get some answers soon.

Take care, jmw

rectoceles dont correct themselves. doing Kegels might help keep it from getting worse, but again, wont correct it. Surgical intervention (a posterior repair) is the treatment but only when the patient feels they cant live with the discomfort any longer.
Keep up on your stool softeners and fiber until you decide when its time to have it repaired.
Is it "normal" after a hysterectomy to develope a rectocele? Well "normal" wouldnt be the word I'd use, however its common for the anterior and posterior walls of the vagina to herniate after a hysterectomy but not usually this early into recovery---its generally years down the road.

I had the same thing happen to me. I could actually see it blocking my vagina. A rectocele, I am told here, is a prolapse of the rectum against the vaginal wall.
I had a rectocele 2 1/2 to 3 months after my hysterectomy & had to have corrective surgery, which has corrected the problem. Be sure & let your doctor know what's up! Depending on the severity of the prolapse, he'll recommend what is necessary for you to avoid further problems or discomfort. I've seen on here that some women can tolerate a slight rectocele without much discomfort. But I don't know how good it is to do that healthwise. Again, check with your dr.

rectocele

I am so sorry you are having this trouble. I had my repaired with my hysterectomy-my doc diagnosed it during a preop exam. I did have a lot of symptoms for years, but I ignored them

Here are some links to articles about them. I found the articles by going to Resources in the menu above. Then doing a seach on rectocele. Then these are the articles that showed up. You can also try a seach on rectocele repair and find some more I think.

There have been other ladies that have had rectocele repairs after their hysterectomy and found them to be very successful.

This may sound gross, but I have enjoyed my normal bm's since surgery!
