1 suggestion from new Princess

Hi to all you LIW! I was crowned on 2-2-01, and, overall the experience was un-eventful, I do have a suggestion for any of you who smoke......TRY TO QUIT, even if it is only until you get home. I didn't, in fact, I had my last cigarette in the parking structure at the hospital, and waking up from the anesthesiology was AWFUL!!!!! The Respiratory Therapy dept. was on me every 2 hours to breathe deep and cough (by God, that hurt!), and I was wheezing all the time......they warned me about pneumonia, I worried about that, so I did the breathing exercises on my own between visits from the Respiratory police.

I know even non-smokers are encouraged to breathe deep and cough, but I also KNOW that my problems were due to my smoking.

By day 3 in the hospital I was doing much better, but, I want you to know, I WAS MISERABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I TRULY believe I could have avoid some of the misery if I had stopped smoking a couple weeks before my surgery.

It's hard to do, the cigs. were a real crutch to me pre-op, but if I had known then what I know now, I would have gotten a patch or something, and put them buggers away!!!!!

Thankfully I'm home now and feeling much better.....I did start smoking again as soon as I got home, which was probably stupid..........DON'T BE AS STUPID AS ME!!!!!

DebiJo, Boy, can I relate to you! I, unfortunately am a smoker, too. Luckily, not very heavy. I did have a cough after my surgery, and it did hurt to try and breathe deeply, and cough post-op. Thanks for sharing honestly, and for the good advice, you've shared. Maybe, you will spare another LIW, the same experience by your posting.Roz
