The nurses at the hospital sent me home with MINT tea. They said it was to get the bowels moving again after surgery. I am two weeks out and still drinking the mint tea and taking stool softeners every day to keep things going.

I have chronic constipation problems and in my research I have never heard that black tea or green tea help with bm. They both have caffine, unlike the herbal teas like mint and ginger. But they say both black and green tea are good for you and full of antioxidants.

My GYN recommended a senna tea like "Smooth Move" or "Get Regular". My DH found it at a Whole Foods market near us in the herbal section. It is delicious and also has peppermint in it. I have used it twice with great cup before bedtime and happiness by noon the next day!

Good luck!

Both "Smooth Move" and Decaff Green Tea with Mint worked for me.

Good luck.

TGL if you have been dealing with this for a long time what would you recommend then that would not make me dependable on it.

I would recommend the senna teas. I use Get Regular, but Smooth Move is just as good. I just found the GR and they were out of the SM. The senna stimuates peristalsis, a nice natural, effective approach to getting the bowels moving. To speed things up, you can drink the tea at night, and have a quart of warm salt water in the morning, drunk as quickly as possible. Use 2 teaspoons of salt in a quart. I can't get the whole quart down, but it still helps a lot at getting things going. The salt keeps the stomach from absorbing the water, and it sends it right on down into the intestines. Of course, drink the salt water on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning.

Hi Alina53 - From what I know, senna is a stimulant and shouldn't be used long term - its a laxitive. Very good if occassionally constipated but can cause a dependency if used long term. I have had troubles for many years and I use soluable fibre (things like metamucil,/benefiber/citrucel) twice daily. These are gentler than insoluable fiber (like bran) which can cause bloating, hard stools and gas. Lots of fluid and exercise (which I know is a little difficult right now) is good too. Since the surgery I've also been taking one stool softener. I did take a herbal laxitive with Senna to get things kick started (at suggestion of my doc who knows my troubles), and this is what some of the teas that have been suggested might do for you. Just check with your doc before you use them long term. Good luck!
