What is granulation?

Hi whisper,

Since the vagina is a moist environment, the vaginal cuff is an area that might not heal as quickly as external incisions. Granulation is scar tissue that begins to form over an unhealed area, therefore preventing/slowing true healing.

What is granulation?

As I understand it, the granulation is also called proud flesh and can develop on the cuff and is generally the cause for spotting following surgery. I had my 4 week post-op pelvic exam (was dreading that!) yesterday and he said there was one spot of granulation that had caused what little spotting I had had in weeks 2 and 3. He cauterized it with silver nitrate.

I had read on various posts that silver nitrate burns like crazy so I was bracing myself for pain. There wasn't any. Other than the discomfort from the speculum, the procedure was painless and fast. I have read other posts where sisters reported not spotting until they are months post-op and their doctors use silver nitrate on whatever granulation had occured at that point.

Have a great recovery!!

What is granulation?

I had three silver nitrate treatments for granulation. Hopefully, all the granulation is gone.

Granulation tissue is sometimes called "overenthusiastic" scar tissue. Left untreated, this scar tissue does not allow the incision to heal properly. During sex or other vigorous activity, the scar tissue can pull away from the incision and cause bleeding. There were also times that I had vaginal cuff pain from the granulation.

At 10 weeks, the nurse practitioner said I had a lot of granulation tissue. I bled after sex and even after riding the lawn mower. The granulation tissue I had was large enough that it had formed a polyp shape. The silver nitrate treatment itself was not painful at all for me, but I AM hoping the granulation is now all gone!
