TED hose

Are these pretty standard after surgery? I know I will hate them with a purple passion, but just wondered if I will possibly wake up with them on.

Thanks

They use the TED hose to help prevent blood clots in your legs while you're bed resting. Mine were put on when I changed into the hospital gown during pre-op prep, I wore them until I'd had a couple short walks around the hospital unit. I didn't think I was going to like them either. But, now, at one year post op, I find that that if I have a long day on my feet - say out going to yard sales or shopping at the mall - if I come home and put them on while I have my feet up watching TV in the evening they actually feel pretty good and take care of that tired feeling in my legs.

Another possibility is that your hospital or your doc use the electric air pumps on your legs. My roommate at the Castle had those the first night I was there. Let me tell you that the socks are much quieter to sleep through!

I did get a version of those leg sized air pumps at home as a gift from my mother post-op, you know "as seen on TV"... they're pretty nice, too, after a long day on the feet.

Look at it this way... better safe than sorry. I'd rather wear the hose and not need them, than to need them and not have worn them!

they should measure around your calves and thighs to find ones that fit correctly - in the UK they make us wear them for six weeks so think yourselves lucky ;0) - however we are allowed to shave our legs and no bowel prep, so I think we get the better deal
