Enema??????

I just today got paperwork from my dr. It tells what diet before and the bowel prep. My friend had this dr. and NO enema. MY paper has enema circled!!! I've never had one and I don't know the first thing about doing one. Oh noooooo... Is it hard to figure out? I have an image in my mind of my grandmothers red enema bag. It was big.
I don't want to do it.

Enema??????

Dr gave me an Enema kit, its a small squeeze bottle with a platic (lubracated) tip.........

***WARNING GRAPHIC***********

The nurse told me I need to um... get on all fours on the ground, fanny in the air, chest low to the ground...... Insert about an inch, and squeeze bottle gently untill its "almost" empty.. then I have to remain in that position for 3-5 mins untilll I strongly feel the need to "evacuate"

Lovely I know.............

Im kicking my hubby and cats OUT of the house during this process, and am not looking forward to this in the slightest!!

same enema boat

Yes hard to imagine.
Well my dr. said to pick up the enema, seems it must look like a douche bottle but a much smaller tip ( thank god)
and place it in laying on your side, and it said if you cant do that, lay up with your legs spread and hope you hit the right hole. Then hold it 15-20 min
OH what fun NOT !

Enema??????

I had to have a bowl prep, it wasn't too bad. There are two positions, I chose the "left side position": Lie on left side with knee bent With steady pressure, insert tip into rectum with a slight side to side movement. Squeeze bottle until nearly all the liquid is gone. Remove from rectum and stay in this position until the urge to evacuate is strong, about 2-5 minutes. These instructions are on the FLEET ENEMA box.

Good Luck.

Enema??????

I am so glad that in the UK we don't have to do enamas (sp!) ourselves. I have to go into the castle the day before so I assume that if I have to have a clear out it will be done then. I'm not sure how it will be done but when I've had abdominal surgery in the past I was just given a laxative and told to hang around the bathrooms.

Enema??????

I am amazed at the disparity.

Why some doctors require the bowl prep, others don't?

I didn't have to. I was told to have a light breakfast the day BEFORE the surgery, then clear liquids during the day, and nothing after midnight. Much more palatable than the enema route.

Enema??????

I laid on my left side to do the enema. It took a long time to get it all in there but it wasn't that bad. After a while it was just boring. I think it's better than drinking a gallon of that crap other women have to drink.

Worrywart,

Doctors have a wide variety of pre-op preparations. A lot depends on what they expect to be doing when they get in there. If they think they may have to do some work around the bowel then they'll do a bowel prep. Others do it just for a precaution in case the bowel gets nicked.

Others don't do anything and hope for the best.

Don't worry ladies!

OK - so I haven't had to do this for surg as of yet, but I have done it in preparations ofr other types of testing.

It's NOT as bad as it sounds - try not to get worked up over it!

TAKE A CLOCK IN THE BATHROOM WITH YOU! Also, if your bathroom is chilly, a little space heater to warm it up for a bit before you start is a nice idea.

I found lying on my back for insertion the easiest, then you can roll to your left side for comfort while you are waiting. DEFINITELY use lubricant, - I don't remember if there's any in the box. You can safely use vaseline as a lubricant for the anus (NOT the vagina though) - Put the lube on your bottom (Be generous!), not the nozzle - don't want to block all those little holes where the fluid comes from.

OK- so you are laying down on a nice comfy towel, clock in clear view, lubricant goes on the bottom, insert nozzle slowly (it's nice and smooth - shouldn't feel any jagged edges or anything), squeeze in all the liquid, roll onto your left side or however you are most comfy, cover up with your bathrobe and rest for (time instructed by your physician or enema instructions). Then when your time is up, onto the potty and relax!

The biggest issue with this whole procedure is RELAXATION. If I have to do one for prep I am going to have a nice hot bubble bath drawn up ahead of time and a lovely candle burning so when I'm finished I can just plop down in there with a good book!

Good luck everyone!
