Epidural for pain management???
When I had my op I was given a spinal block and offered the option of general, sedation or staying awake for the whole thing. I opted for the general and the spinal which was brilliant until it wore off but by then I could use the morphine pump to manage the pain myself.
I was unaware of this option in the uk until the morning of the operation but was really pleased with the pain relief it gave. Hope everything goes well for you,
Ali

Epidural for pain management???
I had general only with my hyst, but for my second c-section, I had a spinal with long-acting morphine in it, with supplemental IV shots (no PCA pump). They actually kept me flat on my back for 24 hours after surgery, watching closely for blood clots and I also had to cough every hour and breathe into that breathing toy thing every couple of hours.
They said they found that they had better success in healing when they keep a person pain-free for 24 hours. I don't know if that is still an option, or if that is what they are talking about doing with you, but I must say that my recovery from that operation was the easiest of my three abdominal surgeries!
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have wanted to be awake for the hyst, however. Yikes.

Epidural for pain management???
Had my TVH on May 3rd. I had a spinal with twilight during surgery - so I wasn't awake. Hour and a half after surgery my spinal wore off in me feet and legs but not in the pelvic area. Dr. said the pain meds would last 24 hours. After the twenty four hours were up I anticipated the "pain" - it never came. My recovery has been quite simple. Just a bit of discomfort here and there - nothing advil couldn't take care of. I think an epidural is a little different. I had one with ablation a few years ago and had a much worse adventure - couldn't feel my legs for hours and hours after the procedure and had lots of cramping too!
Hope this info helps.
Good luck with your surgery!
