Hormones after surgery.....

I'm having a TAH/BSO on June 16. I was thinking that I would have a patch (Climara) on when I woke up from surgery. I found out today that due to endo, I won't be on estrogen for a while. I will be on progestrone right away to supposedly help control hot flashes. I will find out more on 6-13 at pre-op.

I've read posts where doctors differ on whether to put you on hormones right away or wait a while because of the endo. So I am not suprised, but I am curious.......has anyone else been put on progestrone only right after surgery?

Hormones after surgery.....

Hi Cheryl,

Since I kept my ovaries, I don't have an experience to share with you. I know that someone around here does and hopefully, they will be along soon!

Best wishes and I pray that everything works out for you!

Hormones after surgery.....

Hi Cheryl I did have my ovaries removed, but I have been on HRT including estrogen since my surgery, since I had no endo history.

The purpose of using progesterone only for a while after the surgery is to try to kill off any remaining bits of endo that might have been left behind after the surgery. It's impossible for the surgeon to see every tiny bit of endo, so there are no guarantees they can get it all. Endo feeds on estrogen, and progesterone opposes estrogen, so in theory, the progesterone 'starves' the endo off.

However, in women without ovaries, it's highly doubtful that progesterone is going to help with hot flashes or mood swings or any of the other lovely symptoms of surgical menopause. You may want to speak with your DR about other options you can consider to manage your symptoms, should they become bothersome.

You might want to check out the No-Hormone Desert Oasis forum to see what other ladies who cannot use estrogen are doing to manage their symptoms.

Good luck with your surgery!
