appt. at colon rectal office tomorrow

Well, here I go again. I had my rectal tests done 2 months ago and nothing really showed up, except she couldn't locate a certain nerve in my left side. I continue to have bm problems eventhough I take my Miralax, stool softeners and eat bran every morning. I am afraid I will be discharged so to speak after tomorrow. I don't understand what is going on. Alot of the times I still have to splint to empty completely. I shouldn't have to do this since I had my rectocele and enterocele repaired almost 5 months ago.The first 3 weeks after surgery I had to run to the commode, then all of a sudden it became harder for me to go. I really became puzzled. I really thought the bm issues would be over. I was so wrong. I just get bloated feeling and have a hard time usually getting the bm to drop down to the rectum area. I have to strain and I am not supposed to since my repairs. To make it worst I have a small cystocele and am afraid it will make it get larger.
I am seeing a uro/gyn and he is doing tests on my bladder, then is going to follow up on my abdominal issues. I am so glad for that. This rectal dr. also works along with him part time. The uro/gyn told me to make sure I follow up with this rectal dr. I will tell her that and hopefully she will find out what the problem is. This has been going on since my TAH May, 2004. I am so tired of these ongoing issues.

Peg- I'm so sorry you keep having these problems. If they can't figure out what it is I can tell you that fresh pineapple is really working for me lately. Also, that mixture suggested by a sister a while back, equal parts (cup) of bran, applesauce, and prune juice - several tea or tablespoons a day - it really works!

Peg....After trying everything under the sun to keep my bowels moving on a regular and nonstraining basis with my rectocele, I found a very simple remedy that works for me:

Every day, sometime between lunch and dinner, I put one tablespoonful of magnesium citrate in about 4 ounces of cold water and drink it. This solution comes in a bottle....looks like a soft drink....purchased cheaply at any drugstore (Wal-Mart and many grocery stores, too!). I wake up every morning and go with remarkable ease. Keep a bottle in my fridge at all times..............2 bucks' worth will last you a month.

I love this remedy......does not cause cramping or loose stools....AND is not something that can mess up your system. It's proven to be my little miracle!.............Deb

Thanks for your suggestions. I will have to try them.
I had my appt. today with the nurse practioner who is really up on her stuff. I told her about the splinting issue again. She was glad to hear I saw the uro gyn who specializes in the pelvic floor. I let her know he didn't see another rectocele, which was good news. I did tell her how I can at times feel a blob of bm when pushing in my vagina. She said that is not normal. She said she will talk with the dr. and see if she wants me to have another defecography performed. It shows abnormalties in the pelvic floor. The problem now is she found out today that the barium used in the defecography has been recalled. Either way I am glad she will talk with the dr. about my problem. I was told to use a glycerin suppository every morning for a month along with the high fiber diet, Miralax and stool softeners. She said we really need to get me emptying better. If the glycerin doesn't work me after a month I am to switch to Ducalox suppository. I am to return for another appt. in 8 weeks.
I asked her why I would need another defecogram, because I had one before my posterior repairs in Dec. She said after those type of surgeries the pelvic floor changes. Oh boy, just what I need.
For now I am dealing with this ok and will be sure to follow up with her and the uro/gyn. My bladder testing will be done in July.I had the bladder testing this last Jan., but I guess the results could be different since I had that repair job. I am so glad there are some very good specialist in my area.
I feel I am getting some very good treatment. I am going to cancel my tvt with the urologist and follow up with this uro gyn. If I need a tvt he will be able to do it.

I heard back from the colon rectal office today. The nurse practioner said she talked to the dr. and she wants me to start using ducolox every morning now. She also wants me to have another defecogram done. Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but oh well. I am not sure when the trst will be done.

Thanks Fibroid Woman for your suggestion. My doctor did tell me to get Magnesium Citrate and I used it (the whole bottle) last Saturday after not being able to move my bowels since surgery on Tuesday. Thank goodness it worked. Now just to keep things working I will try your suggestion. I never want to get in that condition again and have hoped since surgery I will be good as new soon!

I feel so sorry for those on this board who have surgery and then continue to have so many problems. Hopefully I won't be one of them.

Hi Peggy,
I haven't talked to you in a long time. I sure do hate to hear that you are having problems again. Dang, I thought you were fixed!!!! Bless your heart.....I wish I could help you. The ladies mentioned the magnesium issue. One morning on the way to work, a DJ (guy) was telling of his experience with magnesium. I think he must have been taking extra for vitamin purposes or something. I didn't hear his whole story. Anyway, needless to say. He said the magnesium definitely works. Please stay in touch and I will pray for you.....

Hi Peggy,

My symptoms sound alot like what you are going through so I can understand how you must feel.
My bm won't drop down into the rectum
easily either. The stool is soft enough but the position of my bowels is messed up from my surgery and getting worse all the time. There could also be nerve damage, adhesions, scar tissue or endo. I'm very frightened about what could be going on.
I am two years post op from alot to pelvic repairs and am patiently waiting to see a uro/gyn at the local teaching hospital in hopes of finding some answers. Had to wait four months for an appointment.
Can you tell me what the defecogram is like?
I hope you have success in finding a solution. It sounds as if you have some good docs helping out. I will be interested to follow your experiences.

Thanks for any insight you share.

Hi Sunshine
I haven't heard from you in a long time. It is so nice to see a name from a while back. Eventhough I am still going through these tests and issues I know everything will be ok. That is what doctors are for. I feel wonderful energy wise and don't regret having my hyst a bit. I would do it again and have all of these issues again if I had to.

Jandie
I had a rectocele and enterocele repaired last Jan. I believe the enterocele (sm. intestines dropping into vagina ) is what cause me problems. I didn't then and don't now have much luck getting the bm to drop into the rectum. Sometimes I still have to push in my vagina on a bulge(bm) to get it to empty. How do you know the position of your bowels are messed up? I am wondering if mine are. I also gurgle and thump around on the left lower section of my abdoman. My gyn thinks I have adhesions and will never reopen me. That is why he referred me to the uro/gyn pelvic floor specialist. With the defecogram you drink 2 cups of barium. wait one hour, then go back into the defeco. room. you put a tube of barium up in your vagina, then lay on the x ray table. A radiologist put 4 tubes of barium paste into my rectum. you lay on your side then the table moves up and slides you onto a x ray toilet. they have you sit, then squeeze, then strain to empty. a tape and pictures are taken throughout the whole thing. I watched a monitor andd they showed me the large rectocele and the enterocele. It won't bother me to have it done again. Nothing makes me modest anymore. I have had so many tests. LOL
It shows alot of details about the pelvic floor.type in defecography and do a search. It is quite interesting.

Peggy,

Thanks for the info. Do you have to do a heavy bowel cleansing before the test? Is it painful?
I had an entrocele repaired too but the doc did not tell me he was going to do that before surgery. He did not do a defecogram to prepare for the surgery either, and now I see that it could have been a valuable tool.
I also have the gurgling in my left lower section, it's as though the intestines are trying to move things down, but something is stopping them from doing their job.
I do not know for a fact that my intestines are messed up, but the way they are acting makes me think something wierd has changed. Maybe they have dropped or are kinked? The stool gets right to the top of the rectum and can't make it the rest of the way. Maybe it is adhesions or alot of nerve damage.
I am hoping this next doc will be able to help me.
I still have to wait 3 1/2 weeks for my appointment, I just hope that I can continue to eek out little bm's until then. It feels like an eternity.
