Ibuprofen question

All I need for pain now is ibuprofen. (LAVH 6/16/05) I can take 800 mg. every 8 hours. I am taking over the counter because it is cheaper, but I'm wondering if there is an advantage of taking 400 mg. every 4 hours or 600 mg. every six hours? Does it make a difference because you are still taking 2400 mg. every 24 hours. Just wondering if there are other opinions around.

Thanks,
Donna

Ibuprofen question

I took 400mg every 4 hours for the first week home, and started stretching it out to every six hours after that. I found in the early days I was waiting for that 4 hours so I could take some more. I think by about the 3rd week I was taking it just a couple of times a day.

My bottle says to take it every 4 hours, which to me says it wears off after that. Wouldn't 800 mg. taken all at once wear off after 4 hours too? So regardless of how much you need to take, if it wears off after 4 hours you'll still be going a couple of hours with no pain relief. That could be fine, depending on how much pain you're experiencing.

I know, clear as mud!

Ibuprofen question

Thanks, HollyK. I guess that's the theory I was going on, too. My husband thought it may have something to do with the stomach...you know, maybe only having it mess with the stomach 3 times a day vs. 6 or more. Who knows, but I think it has more to do with not going over the mg. more than how often....at least that's what my guess is.

Ibuprofen question

Clear as mud is right Holly! And to top that, the doctors are prescribing different doses. My doctor said 800mg every 4 hours and that's what I did because the RX was too hard for me to swallow.

I did both to ween off, stretched the hours and took less. It's still pretty important not to have such high doses for a length of time. I needed it for about 3 weeks, then I tapered off to nothing. I do believe it stays in your bloodstream for quite awhile and I agree with you Donna, it's the mg per 24 hour that the Motrin folks must be worried about.

Thank goodness for Motrin

Ibuprofen question

Well, I was prescribe this as well as percocet (325 mg., 1-2 tabs., every 4-6 hours as needed), but I don't like the way it makes me feel...but now I'm getting pretty sore and am thinking about taking one (or 1/2) now.
