Pap Smears with Cervix question.....

Initially my doctor told me, if I removed my cervix I would need a pap smear every 3 to 5 years. If I kept it, I would need to continue yearly. At my 5 week check up (I have the lower portion of my cervix) he told me I have to have a pap next year and then every 3 - 5 years..... So, now I am confused. What have you been told about pap smears in the future? I think i will continue yearly regardless as a measure of safety since my ovaries need to be checked out yearly, may as well. Thanks for your answers in advance..
Hugs,
Kathleen

Pap Smears with Cervix question.....

Hi Kathleen,

I also kept my cervix. I was told that I would need to continue to have yearly pap smears. I would imagine that if you say you prefer to have them yearly, your doctor probably would not object.

Sending best wishes.

Pap Smears with Cervix question.....

My doctor has told me I would need to come yearly for pap and have an ultrasound of my "stump" (cervix) every 3 years. I have heard once you have had normal paps for several years in a row it may be okay to have pap every 3 years as cervical cancer is very slow growing and can take up to 5 years to develop even after an abnormal pap. I have to keep going every year because I know if I skip one then skipping the next one is easy too!

Pap Smears with Cervix question.....

Hi Cindy
The ultrasound every 3 years of the stump (lovely term, ehh?) is interesting. Do you know why you have to have that?

Pap Smears with Cervix question.....

I'm going to go every year for an exam and a pap smear. Better to be safe than sorry--read about our sisters who've developed vaginal cancer. I don't want to go through that!

Pap Smears with Cervix question.....

Lonicero,
The reason he told me I needed to have ultrasound of my "stump" (yes, lovely term) is that he can do pap smear of bottom but the only way he can see what's going on on top is with u/s since it is sewn shut and he can't see or feel it.

Pap Smears with Cervix question.....

I too was told that I would need a pap smear every year as there is always a little cervix tissue left.
