Suggestions For Helping Fellow Hystersisters

One thing we can do to help our fellow hystersisters (or any other person in need, for that matter) during their recovery time is to offer to babysit their children so they can have some quiet time to themselves. We can take their children to the park (which is free), or to McDonald's for Happy Meals (which is cheap).

As I mentioned in the other forum, I have had many people thank me for just sending a card saying I was thinking about them, praying for them, just wanted them to know I cared about their situation. So, I buy all kinds of cards in a box--blank, get well, thinking of you, etc., and stamps at Costco, so I have plenty of both at all times and any time I hear of someone sick, hurting, a death, etc., I try to send them at least one card. For a friend in another town who was going through radiation treatment after breast cancer, I sent a card every few weeks. For by best friend whose husband is deployed in Iraq, I send them all the time!

Meals are always a huge help, especially for families with smaller children. Gift certificates for food delivery services are one way to help if you are unable to prepare a meal. We have a couple of non-pizza places in our town that deliver food. Or even if there is no time to prepare, you can pick up a meal from some place like Kentucky Fried Chicken.

For the past several days, I have been trying to figure out what kind of "permanent" solution could be put in place to help women who have had major surgery, including hysterectomies, mastectomies, breast reconstruction, etc. It would be nice if a non-profit organization existed to assist women in these situations. Individuals could provide meals, house cleaning, babysitting (in the home?), running errands, etc. I have no idea what it would take to start something like this, but perhaps it's worth investigating.

You've all shared some great ideas. I also have found that a simple phone call to ask for they're doing is very very welcome. I know that I feel better just knowing that someone cares.

I also sometimes offer to run errands for those in need. Grocery shopping, going to the post office etc. It's always greatly appreciated.
