total hysterectomy cure for PCOS

HI, Since my last post my DR has rec. that instead of just taking the uterus we take it all. I have pcos which seems to be the cause of all my bleeding, pms weight gain etc.. I have concerns because i am 37 and don't want to deal with HRT for years. Especially since my mom had Breast CA twice at a young age. It was also the estrogen receptor kind. I also don't want to spend my life bleeding or in a sate of constant pms. I am taking so many meds to control the symptoms of pcos I feel like an old lady! I also had an endo ablation 5m ago which lessened the bleeding Slightly but didn't stop the cramps or mood issues. I feel like I am choseing between two evils! Can anyone offer any guidence

HI lilyflower

I don't have any personal experience with PCOS so I don't have much advice to offer but I wanted to share a past thread that discusses this subject. There are also some good links about PCOS that may be very helpful.

Here is a link to the resource database and there are some articles in there about breast cancer and HRT that you may find helpful. You can also type in the word PCOS under the "perform search" and find some things to read.

I know it is a tough decision for some women who are trying to decide if it is best to keep their ovaries. Please do some reading and research about the pros and cons to make sure this will help ease the symptoms of PCOS. The symptoms of menopause can be quite uncomfortable and being that you are so young it may be hard to go without any hormones to help ease you through the transition.

Best Wishes with your decision.

Hi Lilyflower,

I am unsure what PCOS is (I am Scottish and don't understand some of your abbreviations! Sorry!) but by your description of your symptoms I am going through something similar to you. I have been suffering since my periods started but symptoms have gotten much worse during the past 4 years. I visit to the doctor tomorrow to discuss the next step, which is counselling (I am on 34 with no kids). Let me know how things are for you, it is good to know I'm not alone.

Dear Zadude, You are not alone!! PCOS stands for polycystic ovarian symdrome. Its a fairly common problem, especially realted to infertility. Common symptoms are; irregular periods, heavy bleeding, central obesity(big belly), increased levels of testosterone(chin/face hair etc..)problems with the way your body deals with insulin, cysts on ovaries, mood swings. Those are some of the more common ones. Its alot of fun believe me. If your DR tells you you have it a great site or info is soulcysters.com. Like this great site except it deals with PCOS. Good Luck and please let me know how it goes!!

Hi Lilyflower,

I also have PCOS, and understand your predicament. Unfortunately, I have not found any research that deals with PCOS after an oopherectomy, especially concerning hormone balance (except that it is difficult). The only thing that has become apparent is that it is not a cure for PCOS. PCOS is an endocrine issue, and while it can, and often does affect the ovaries, the ovaries are not the cause or the solution to PCOS.

Have you spoken with your Dr about your fear of HRT and an oopherectomy? With a BSO, you will be thrown into surgical menopause. Without HRT, at 37 years old it will likely be extremely uncomfortable and life-changing. It can be many times worse than PMS.

So, the essence of the issue is that you will likely be trading one set of problems for another. The way I made my decision was by reading as much as I could here: Hormone Jungle and Sexual Dysfunction . Then I read about the problems that women were having on the different message boards. After doing all of that and making a list, I decided for me, at 50 years old, while I might be trading off one set of problems for another, I was willing to make that trade for a chance to feel a little better.

I am glad you are researching and asking questions. Keep it up. This is a decision that you will have to live with so make the best one for you.

s,
Kay

Thanks Kay, you pretty much sumed up all my concerns. This deliema really makes me want to scream! Two years age I had thyriod cancer and had to have my thyriod taken out, then some radiation. So I have that to deal with too. Have any of the treatments for PCOS helped you? I am hoping my endocrine spec. will have some new ideas. The total hys is my LAST resort. I don't feel mentally ready to be in menopause. Thanks again for your help! This is the only place I can vent with women who really get it!

total hysterectomy cure for PCOS

Hi Lily,

I too have PCOS and am due to have my hyst on Oct 31st. My primary reason for the hyst is endo....endo which I feel is a result of the PCOS. I've already had to have my gallbladder out (a common thing with PCOSers). I too worried about taking my ovaries but as my doc and I chatted we both agreed that one wammy (my adrenals) was better then two (adrenals & ovaries). My hope is that medically they can get my hormones under control by just having to deal with one gland. With that said I won't be able to start HRT right away though, so the endo has a chance to "suffocate". Best wishes to you!

Hi Lily I have PCOS also, so I know all about the pain, heavy bleeding, weight gain and all that goes with it. my doc has me on hormones, but the way I feel today, I'm beginning to wonder if I shouldn't just have them taken out. I'm doing lots of research for the pros and cons of it. This site is so helpful, glad I found it. Let us know how it's going. K.I.T
