Weight Gain after surgery

I am a new member and have spent a lot of time over the last two days reading posts. My surgery is scheduled for Sept. 28th. I have at least two large fibroids and my uterus is enlarged to the size of a 3-4 month pregnancy. One of the main reasons I have decided to have this surgery is because I am so uncomfortable all of the time because the enlarged uterus makes me feel so bloated and gives me pain in my lower left abdomen. Now after reading posts about the weight gain and swelling some ladies have experieced after surgery I am worried that I may not get as much relief from my symptoms as I had hoped. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Weight Gain after surgery

Hi Terri,

I am 47 and I had my hyst over a year ago and I have not gained any weight. I find that pants and shorts I wear now are looser then they were in pre-op because I do not have the "fibroid belly".

In my opinion, from what I have read on Hyster Sisters, post-op weight gain can be caused by a Hyster Sister's age, diet, metabolism, inactivity due to a hyst and if the ovaries are removed and hormones and/or HRT is being balanced out.

Also, you mentioned having a 3-4 month uterus size from fibroids. Have you possibly looked into a less invasive surgery such as a laparoscopic hyst?? A LAVH and a LSH are two types. Generally, with a laparoscopic surgery, the down time in post-op can be shorter. With my LSH, I got a greeenlight for all activities - including the gym - at 6 weeks.

Here is a Hyster Sisters link that goes over the different types of hysts:

Best wishes.

Mary
