Lupron Anyone?

I'm seeking to hear personal experiences from people who have taken Lupron...

I had a TLH w/ LSO a year ago last June because of consistent and chronic pain due to severe endo and ovarian cysts. Against the advice of my I kept my right ovary. Since the surgery my pain level has not improved... This past June (one year after my surgery) my pain was so horrible that my doctor ordered an ultrasound which revealed an ovarian cyst. I had a follow up ultrasound a few weeks ago which revealed another cyst; it was unclear whether it was the same cyst or a new one.

ANYHOW, my doctor is proposing that we try two shots of Lupron as a "diagnostic" tool to determine if the source of my pain is the ovary (and perhaps endo) OR something else. He wants to do this before he removes my one remaining ovary. I trust my doctor; he is a specialist in endo. Yet I am very fearful of Lupron. I have heard so many horror stories, including of women who have permanent neurological damage after taking Lupron.

Has anyone taken Lupron??? What were your side effects? I appreciate and thank anyone who takes a moment to share their experiences with me...

Lupron Anyone?

Clemantine,
I used Lupron before my hyst.....there are lots of side effects. Please really research your info on this.....I really agree with Lynn Marie, who has posted some sites you could go to in order to find as much info as possible......I think it's a personal decision that many of us have been forced to make, but, it's one that we should be as informed as possible before going into........

Lupron Anyone?

Hi Clementine,

I did (3) months of lupron shots in pre-op to shrink my fibroids enough for a less invasive hyst.

Lupron casues temporary chemical menopause. I had hot flashes and night sweats and I lost interest in sex. My lupron side efffects wore off right before my surgery and I have not had any permanent side effects.

For me...lupron got me to my LSH so each time I had a hot flash or night sweat I was thinking I was closer to my LSH. I made it as mental as possible to get me through.

Lupron is a ~band-aid~ on the problem. A temporary fix. Lupron is not for everyone and it sounds like you are doing your research. Lupron was a success in my case.

Best wishes,

Mary

Lupron Anyone?

Hi Clementine
I have used Lupron twice now. 3 shots a couple of years ago before surgery to remove an endometrioma and the ovary it was attached to. The shots were to help keep the thing from growing until it could be removed. I had no side effects from that round.

Round two, I have so far had 7 shots at twice the dosage as the previous round because I now have 3 cysts on the remaining ovary. While I have had some achiness, headaches and hot flashes, I realized the other day that I haven't refilled the prescriptions for pain medication that normally would have run out long ago. In fact, I still have most of the last refill I got before starting the shots.

These side effects didn't really kick in until around the 4th shot. I have 2 more to go before surgery scheduled at the end of October.

Hope this helps.

Lupron Anyone?

You might also ask about Synarel (nasal spray) instead of the Lupron depot (shot). I asked for Synarel because I had been on it before and my side effects were not nearly as bad as what I've heard about Lupron. In my mind, the nasal spray would be slower and gentler as compared to shot where the medicine is administered all at once. That was my preference. Plus I have a great mail order pharmacy benefit thru work and my costs were not a concern. If you have to pay out of pocket for Synarel, its quite costly (IMO).

Of course, we are all very individual in our chemical reactions. I just put this on the table as another option. Do check the cost and think of the hassle factor of taking two nasal spray doses a day rather than 1 shot a month.

I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you. Keep us posted and let us know how we can help.

Lupron Anyone?

Clementine,
I am one person that DID NOT have good things come from LUPRON.I have stage 4 endo & after my lap to do clean out,my doc said lupron should take care of the rest.I took one shot & in 24 hours i lost all hearing in my left ear.I went to ear, nose & throat doc, who did hearing test & said i was totally deaf in left ear & he didn' t know why.To make a long story short i got my hearing back when the shot wore off.My gyn. said no it wasn't from lupron but ear doc said yes & the makers of lupron even contacted him. He's now writing a paper on it.I would hope you can find another solution.best to you!

Lupron Anyone?

I had horrible migraines for the four months I was on Lupron! Of course all my doctors said it wasn't from the Lupron but I had never had migraines before and they stopped when the last shot wore off. Just my experience.

Lupron Anyone?

I have been on Lupron 3 times. Once after surgery for a tubal pregnancy, and two other times after laps for endo. For me, it took care of the pain while I was on it, but as soon as the shots wore off, it seems like the endo came back quickly. The side effects are very unpleasant - hot flashes!. The second time I was on it, I had the most horrible back pain. I had to go to a pain clinic and get a block. I also trust my Dr. I swore I wouldn't ever take it again after the second time, because I was diaganosed with fibromyalgia (I really think the lupron ahd something to do with that - just a gut feeling) but when I had surgery last September, he wanted to put me on it again. This last time I had one shot that lasted for 3 months, and the side effects weren't quite so bad. For me it took care of the pain and bleeding for three months, but it is a trade off for sure. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Lupron Anyone?

I am about to have a LAVH with A & P repair on SEP,14 2005 . I tried lupron for a few months for endo. I didin't like the side effects. I had bad hot flashes, was very moody to the point that my family did not want me in the house. but everyone is different. Before you take the lupron check out all side effects.Once you take the shot it is no turning back. I haven't had the shot more than two months ago and still having really bad hot flashes best of luck to you.
