Pre-surgical counseling ????

Well, I went to my OB for my pre-op yesterday. He walked in, shook my husband's hand, and took one look at me and said YOU'RE NOT READY....I can see it in your eyes. So, he's suggested that I see ANOTHER high-risk OB just for reassurance on the pregnancy decision and the huge risks involved AND see a psyciatrist for a pre-surgical evaluation.

Have any of you gone thru seeing someone before your procedure?

Pre-surgical counseling ????

Hi bugsy

I haven't been in your situation, but wanted to send you some hugs! I've read some of your other posts, and see that you have heart trouble that makes it dangerous to carry a baby, and that you have heavy monthly bleeding. I'm so sorry you are dealing with all this. You have a lot on your plate!

I guess my feeling is that you have a very sensitive and caring doctor! How wonderful that he *realizes* you are struggling with these issues. I think it's a great idea to get as many opinions, and as much reassurance as you need, before you move forward.

Have you gotten a diagnosis regarding the heavy bleeding? Depending on the exact cause, there may be alternative treatments that could be less invasive.

Sending you best wishes, and some extra hugs.

Pre-surgical counseling ????

Bugsy, your doc really sounds wonderful and compassionate. I went for my pre-op yesterday, the doc walked in and shook my hand and said to my partner, "Wow, she's ready! But you're really nervous, aren't you?" I guess with experience, the good doctors can read us pretty well.

I just wanted to pipe in to say when I saw the title of your post, I thought it was a really great idea to have some presurgical counseling, particularly from a therapist who can work with your gyno, if there are any doubts at all that this is the right decision for you.

I know we don't always have a lot of time to make these important decisions, but I think it is important to be as sure as possible since a surgery like this can not be undone.

Sending hugs and good thoughts that you come to the right decision for you, and find peace.

Pre-surgical counseling ????

I was already seeing a counselor for depression and she's been great in seeing me along in recovery. I highly recommend both consults!

It's certainly not a bad idea to talk to a counselor before making a decision that you might not be totally ready for. Someone who is not biased to the situation and can be a good sounding board.

It's a really hard to decision to make when you want to have children, but to have to decide to no longer try and have a hysterectomy. BTDT. It's not easy.
