Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy

I have finally decided that I must go ahead and have surgery after many years of fighting extremely low blood counts. My gynecologist says I am not a candidate for vaginal that I will have to have abdominal surgery but after researching I discovered the LSH procedure. When I called my doctor she said that if I was not a candidate for vaginal then I would not be a candidate for the LSH (very disappointing to me) although all of my research on LSH (and I did call a doctor that does this procedure and he did not feel this was the case) did not give me this indication. Does anyone have any feed back on this? I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

I do not know why you would not be a candidate for LSH, I just had it done on August 24th. My doctor says if the doc. does not know the exact procedure they can hurt you. I was down for 3-4 days. My sis-in-law had it done and was down for 8 weeks. My doc said because it was done incorrectly. (My doc invented this surgery.) He says it has a shorter recovery time (and it does). Keeps the bladder in place. I was able to have sex a week and a half later. Can they leave your cervix and ovaries??? If so I don't see why you could not have it done. I had five small incisions. The larges bikini cut, still only four stitches. I was in the hospital less than 24 hours. I could pick up my 5 yr old a week and a half later. I am glad I did this surgery.

Dear Smrlvn:

The type of surgery you have will depend on your diagnosis and your doc's level of surgical skills. Any of the less-invasive procedures could evolve into an abdominal surgery based on what happens in the OR.

It sounds like you would benefit from a 2nd or 3rd medical opinion. Get smart about your symptoms and your options, and make the best choice for YOU. I am sending huge cyberhugs

Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy

My dr. also told me I could only have a vag.hyst. becuz of the size of my uterus (12-14 wk pregnancy size). I listened to him for 10 yrs and finally went to see someone else. I am planning on having the laproscopic surgery where they make 3 small incisions, insert a tube and cut the uterus out in pieces. If I were you I'd get a 2nd opinion or ask your dr. why you can't have morcellation hyst. It could be he/she doesn't know how to do it. Teresa

Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy

Hi Smrlvn,

I agree with the other ladies. It might be time for a 2nd opinion. I found from my own experience that my gyneo Dr. of 5 yrs. recommended a TAH because she was ~not~ trained to do laparoscopic hysts. My 2nd opinion did have the training and he felt I was a good candidate for the less invasive hyst.

With a LSH, the uterus is not removed via the vagina. As Teresa and Connie mentioned, there are a few smaller incisions. I had a belly button incision and two small hip incisions. Here is a link that goes over the LSH:

Best wishes. We Hyster Sisters are here to help if we can.
