Having Cervix removed

My Dr. is also planning on removing my cervix when I have my hysterectomy. Would there be any reason this is not a good thing to do? Does it make much difference?

Having Cervix removed

Everyone and every doc is different. I had my cervix removed (I had a TVH on 6/9) and have not missed it. Others prefer to keep it for various reasons and I'm sure they'll post here for you. The best thing is for you to discuss the pros and cons with you doc for your situation and come to a decision that you are comfortable with. Best wishes with your surgery & recovery!

Hi Christinalynn,

Is there a medical reason for your Dr wanting to remove your cervix? Here is a link with some very good information: Keep Cervix?
I'm glad you are asking questions. Learn as much as you can.

Kay

Having Cervix removed

Hi there I am 7 months post op. Feel pretty good. ,a nd had a good recovery. I too had to decide weather to keep my cervix. Ultimately I had it removed because every woman has a chance of getting cervical cancer and I thought if I could prevent something like that why wouldn't I? All the sensations in that area are still the same, as far as the bedroom goes. I can't even tell that it's gone. Good luck , hope this helps

Having Cervix removed

There are many opinions on keeping or removing the cervix. Please check out the link that kay m posted.

You are generally considered to be a good candidate to retain the cervix if you have had normal pap test results and test negative for HPV. If you keep the cervix, you must still get regular pap tests.

If you keep your cervix and at least one ovary, there is a SMALL chance that you may have cyclical bleeding. I have not had this, but some women do. Your surgeon can cauterize the cervical stump to prevent any cyclical bleeding.

Also, the SAH is a simpler surgical procedure. There is no vaginal cuff to make and no vaginal tissues to heal. I have read countless threads dealing with silver nitrate treatments on the vaginal cuff due to scar tissue, etc.

Please discuss all the pros and cons with your doctor. I am sure you will make the best decision for you.
