Awareness in Your Area for Gyn Cancer and OVCA Cancer Month?

The Univ. of WI Comprehensive Cancer Center had a nice event--no media coverage that anyone is aware of.

I just broke down and did letters to the editors of both our daily papers, hoping that something is better than nothing.

Even the American Cancer Society on its national home page has nothing--they have children's cancer (which I say has to be co-featured--who would wish this on a child) but NOTHiNG on gyn/ovca but something with a prominent pink ribbon for breast. (They heard from me.)

Outside of major areas what is going on? This seems like a very sad year out here in the Midwest except for maybe the bigger cities of Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, etc.

Same here, Ellen. It's all Breast Cancer awareness around here.
We do have one event next week, a candlelight ceremony honoring 'all women with gynecological cancers'

Awareness in Your Area for Gyn Cancer and OVCA Cancer Month?

Last weekend, in the Town Crier there was a large advertisement stating that September being Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Would have been even nicer if they had done more.

Awareness in Your Area for Gyn Cancer and OVCA Cancer Month?

Seems like lately when they say anything, they discuss September as being Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and forget about the other gyn cancers. Also, although Breast Cancer Awareness Month is in October, they start their campaign in early or mid-September, thus effectively taking over a substantial part of Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month too.

Just the other day I wrote to the American Cancer Society's Cancer Survivor's Network because they are highlighting ovarian cancer in September. I asked them if they knew it was Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, not just ovarian. They told me they feature cervical and other gyn cancers in January during Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. I wrote back and asked them if in light of the fact that there are more cases of endometrial cancer than there are of cervical and ovarian combined, they would have a month in which they "feature" endometrial cancer as well, especially since according to ACS and SEER statistics the number of deaths from endometrial cancer more than doubled between 1986 and 2000, without a corresponding increase in the number of diagnosed cases.

I received word that my email was passed on to the "powers that be," so we'll see what, if anything, they have to say.

Take care,

MoeKay
