Anyone else canceled surgery?

My surgery was scheduled for today and I called my Dr. yesterday and told him I wasn't ready. I have had it scheduled for the pasy 5 weeks and as it has gotten closer I have become more and more scared. Can't seem to find any comfort in the situation and don't feel ready to go through it. I have fibroids with minimal symptoms, but told my uterus is 16 week size. I am a thin person and you'd never know it's that large. I fear of all the thing's that can go wrong and I'm just not ready to deal with any of that. Just wondering if anyone else did this and if at some point you found peace with the situation so that you could go through with the surgery. I know I need to have it done but I don't want to start the worry cycle all over again. I did have a second opinion and was told that my uterus was a little smaller than my Dr. say's it is ( 12 week) and she thought I'd need a hysterectomy too. So I know it would be the right thing to do, I'm just terrified about everything that could go wrong. I have numerous drug allergies and fast beating "fluttery" heart and the vein in my left hand got damaged during a ct scan. So I'm afraid that something is bound to go wrong. My Dr. really doesn't seem to concerned about any of it but I am. Just wondering if anyone else has canceled and rescheduled and had a good outcome. Thanks!

Anyone else canceled surgery?

Hey Cindy! I know exactly what your talking about!!! I felt and do still feel that way sometimes! It changes every hour or minute!! I know I need the surgery too but I'm terrified that something could go wrong and I don't like the recovery time! I think these are all natural feelings! Everyone I talk to says just do it and get it over with! It's easy for them to say that, they're not having it done! I know for me I won't be at peace with it even on surgery day! I'm just scared and that's ok! It's the unknown I'm scared about! Just know you're not alone! I haven't even started to pack a bag and today I just started to plan for childcare. My pre-op is Friday so I guess it will really sink in then! But then I'm on that plane to Vegas Saturday! I'll make that drink a double for the both of us!

Anyone else canceled surgery?

The preop isn't so bad. Just blood drawn, urine and a ekg. I thought I was ready then but then I got even more worried. I do think that it's natural- after all it's our lives. Everyone has told me the same thing- just get it over with. Easy for them to say I guess. I know that they are just thinking of me though.
Yes, makes those doubles!! I haven't drank in a while due to the "supposed" surgery so I'm definately having one this weekend.( OR 4) ha ha Have fun!

Anyone else canceled surgery?

Hi Ladies

I know excatly how you are feeling. I found out that I had fibroids almost 3 years ago, and at that time the Dr told me that a hyst would be the best option for me. I decided to wait because, symptoms were not to bad and I was not ready for surgery. I continued to have ultra sounds every 9-12 months and the fibroids would grow, others would shrink. Each time I was told to seriously consider the hyst. In December of 2004 I had another ultra sound and a fibroid was at the top of the cervix, thus making things a little more complicated. I decided to have the surgery done, and was scheduled for the first week in January. Four days before the surgery date I called and said I wasn't ready to go. I also had the negative thoughts of things going wrong, the what if's and if not's and I have some anxiety to go with it. During the next several months I began to get so tired, anemia set in, and one fibroid was pushing against my bladder. I finally had to tell myself that things were not going to get any better and I had given myself enough time to see if they would. I went in and was scheduled to have surgery again on July 11th. When I went in for my pre-op I had my mind made up I would cancel thinking of some excuse to use. But then I thought things are not going to get better in my situation and I needed to make up my mind once and for all. I finally went through with the surgery. I can honestly tell you that I wish I had done it 3 years ago. The healing part of my incision was the hardest as it had a terrific burn to it, but each week I felt so much better. I am now almost 3 months out and I can only tell you that once I decided that enough was enough I went through with it. It was without doubt the best decison I made. You are not alone in this, only you can make the decision, I can only tell you I am thankful I went through with it. Know in your heart what feels best for you.

Anyone else canceled surgery?

Ann, Thanks for your story. I was wondering what kind of incision you had? I am really opposed to the vertical one. One Dr. said I might have to have it and the other one said I would not need it. I know that my symptoms wont get any better I'm just really afraid. I'm not anemic or having too many problems. Just the sore achy feeling in my pelvis. My back kinda aches at times too. I know i"m gonna have to just do at some point. I actually found out 3 year's ago about mine, too. We have done the "watch and wait" with checkups every 4 months. Mine apparently has gone from a 4.5cm to about 6-7 cm now. I have no lump or swollen stomach though. I still wear same size as 3 year's ago. I only have one fibroid that we know about, but there could be more. I hope not. Anyway, thanks again for your insight.

Anyone else canceled surgery?

My surgery was schedule in early July--I called the Friday before and cancelled. I truly feel you shouldnt have the surgery until you feel at peace in your mind about having it. I cancelled the surgery, about a week later started my period---immediately called and rescheduled surgery. I have not regretted my decision at all.

Good luck!!

Anyone else canceled surgery?

Hi Cindy,
I know what you are going through.
I was scheduled for 9-19...went to hospital received my IV and panicked...took IV out and left.I know i need the surgery...so I rescheduled for 10/10 and am still scared...but i regretted sooo much by not going through with my first surgery date all i can think of is that it would have been over with now i have another two weeks of panic that never seems to hit me until i go to bed.
I hope you are able to come to a comfortable decision that is right for you...I think that everyone that has any kind of surgical procedure has doubt/fears..it's normal, but as with life anything can happen.I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and hope the very best for you, Bernice

Anyone else canceled surgery?

GA,
That's probably going to be what I do. I'll have a bad period or some pain and decide to get it done. I think fear is what's holding me back. I'm glad you had a good result!

Whoa Burnice! That was a spur of the moment change of heart!! I can't believe you left the hospital. That's sounds like me!! I haven't rescheduled yet because I'm trying to let my nerves subside a little. Then like you said once it's rescheduled the anxiety starts all over again. I was thinking today that I would be finished had I gone through with it yesterday. Instead I'm right back to square one again. Now I kind of regret it too. I have been all over the place- one minute sort of ready and the next No Way am I having it. This is so hard. I will hold you in my thougths and prayers that this time you will get it over with and come through just fine.

Anyone else canceled surgery?

Hi alcat.

I also postponed my surgery. When my surgery was first scheduled, I ended up postponing it another month. I needed that additional month to research, pray and mull things over in my mind. Some people in my family gave me some "heat" about it saying that I'd just spend the extra month fretting. Now, don't get me wrong, I did fret somewhat and that's natural...but for me, I used each and every day of that extra month to prepare and to be more sure and at peace! Looking back, I would not have changed a thing. I needed more time to be "ready". In the end, I had to go in earlier anyway...I ended up with an emergency hyster. If you are waiting for each and every fretful feeling to leave you, you will be waiting a long time!! LOL. But you should at least be able to have enough peace to know that you have exhausted every other option before going through with a hyster. God bless.
