Stress, emotions, cancer

What a grim title!

Every once in a while someone posts a query about the role of stress in causing cancer or fostering a recurrence. Today I was browsing around in Medscape, looking for something on another topic, and came across this artilce:

www.medscape.com/viewarticle/444136

It's a review of medical studies on the topics of stress, personality, emotions , life events and cancer occurence/recurrence. In case you are curious but don't want to read it (or are afraid to read it because you have always feared "this is all my own fault,") I will summarize:

The answer is yes, no, maybe.

Really there is nothing solid out there. Denial did look promising, however, and I liked that, as it is my favorite defense mechanism. Nobody did anything to cause this, but maybe there's a weak association like green tea, and it couldn't hurt any of us to relax and enjoy life.

Now I was disappointed that there were no studies on the beneficial aspects of shopping. It is the therapy I am most consistent in pursuing. Tomorrow I will be camping outside a furniture store with a UHaul truck 2 hours before it opens, so I can buy the sectional couch of my dreams at 40% off. Used to be I camped out to get Beatle or Springsteen tickets. I am also ordering a chest bed (two rows of drawers underneath the bed) so we can finally put away all out junk at once. We currently depend on at least 23% our clothes being in the wash to maintain order.

Everybody have a great day, it's good for ya!

Stress, emotions, cancer

Thanks Michele...most of the things I have read (and the doctors) say, no, stress does not play a confirmed role. Perhaps in diseases like heart disease, yes...if stress caused cancer then everyone would get it, because today's modern world is all about stress. And some people with the most stressful jobs/lives never get cancer.

It's my theory that cancer is more common now because:

of environmental and lifestyle, dietary causes (and even some of those are questionable)

and because, well, 100+ years ago, people just didn't live long enough to develop cancer! Something else usually got them first.

My mum, husband and friend are all advocates of the denial system (i.e. don't worry about stuff you have no control over), and I am trying to learn how to do that. It is difficult for a chronic worrier such as myself.

The stress question has been on my mind a lot lately because I'm having a year from hell (started with the cancer, then things kind of snowballed...) So I would rather not think this is worsening my chances!

Enjoy your new couch and put your feet up!

Hi Michele
Thanks for the input - good old denial, nothing like it.
Enjoy your new lounge - laughed when I read your reasons a few years ago for camping out early!
