Catheter and Epi ?

Ummmm nervous, surgery is in a month. I know nothing about it yet. my pre op is on until Nov 1 . do they have to put the catheter in? That freaks me out. and what about an epidural? I am scared to death of those . that is the main reason I had no drugs giving birth.

Catheter and Epi ?

hello,
you receive your cathedar after you are put to sleep...and yes you usually keep it in for the first day...you do not have to get an epidural...please talk to your dr. about your choices...i am being put to sleep the old fashion way..iv..and will have a moriphine pump for pain...hope this helps,
Bernice
p.s. i am very nervous as well...but take a deep breath...the waiting is what makes everthing seem worse.

Catheter and Epi ?

The epidural can be a very scary concept but I had one when I gave birth and it is not a big deal. You don't see the needle and it doesn't hurt. All I felt was a little pinch and then pressure, like someone was using a finger to push on my back. I think, and I repeat think, that it's safer than general. Less risks maybe, but I'm not sure. Just something to take into consideration.
But don't worry, there are lots of options and your doctor and you can decide what is best for you.

Catheter and Epi ?

Hi there Misskelly -

I can certainly understand your nervousness as I was almost out of my mind with anxiety prior to my TVH. Yes, my dear you will have a cath but like bernicelynne said they'll wait until your "out" in the OR before putting it in. When you wake up later you'll be glad it's in because you won't have to get up to go pee.

I didn't have an epidural with my TVH but I really wish that I would have been given that option. I know I'd have been alot more comfortable. I was given the morphine pump but it wasn't very effective for me. The nurses had to keep coming in & giving me higher doses...it wasn't until the next day when I started taking percocet that I felt my pain was truly under control. That was my experience but for you, hey the morphine will probably work great!! I'm just the odd one here.

In regards to the pain of an epidural, yes it is uncomfortable while it is being placed but it's not excruciating by any means & the end result is so worth it. After cleaning & preparing the area on your back, the anesthialologist will then numb the area on your back where the epidural will be placed. This is the uncomfortable part. It stings but then goes numb pretty quick. After that you just feel some pressure but no pain...& then think 24 hours being pain free!!! I'm so jealous!!

Good luck to you on your future surgery!!!

Tracy is right I wold love to receive the epidural but my gyn is against it...my luck! I can't even have anything to relax me before surgery and he knows i panic....I left hospital the last time right before they wheeled me off to OR you would think my DR would learn to keep me calmer.

With an epidural are you awake for the surgery. Just Curious. I wasn't given that option for my Hyst on 9/7/05. I had general anesthesia so I was off to dream land for my hyst. Don't worry I am sure you and your DR will make the right choice for you. Good Luck with your upcoming surgery.

Catheter and Epi ?

OH man..I am in for it.. pain meds make me soo sick.. I don't know how I am going to handle the pain. I can only take one half of vicodin at a time or I get sick.. that is one thing I am really nervous about, is feeling the pain and being sick.

I had a lump removed from my breast a year and a half ago and after I was sick for three days! that was no fun.

Cajunwoman2 - It is my understanding that you can have an epidural AND general anesthia...if not no way would I want to be awake!!!!!!!!

MissKelly - Please be sure to let your anesthia doc know that you get nauseous from pain meds. There are some really good anti-nausia meds that he/she can give you in your IV that should help. I'm sending prayers your way that everything will go well for you. By the way, your surgery day is my mom's b-day so no way will I forget! I'll be thinking about you.
