any suggestions? neuropathy of the feet/legs

ah, the joys of chemo.

every time I go to the onc. they ask if I have symptoms of neuorpathy in my feet or legs, and I say "no".

well, guess what?

my toes are numb, and my feet and legs are all tingly.

any advice on how to feel better?

Hi b'way fan,

I'm not sure if the l-glutamine will help after you already have neuropathy. I started taking it before I ever started chemo and was never bothered with any symptoms of neuropathy at all. Anyway, I took 3 teaspoons of the powder in juice twice daily. I also think I remember someone saying that the b-vitamins would help to ward off neuropathy. Hope this helps. At the very least, maybe it would keep it from getting worse.

Good luck,

Hi Fan,
I am sorry that the neuropathy has hit you. I was one of the lucky ones and with all of my chemos never had that problem.
Cricket is right though. There is something that you can take to lessen the pain but please, before taking anything, check with your oncologist.
Hope all goes well.

Hi Broadway. How's NYC these days? And how are your daughters getting along? I'm glad to hear that you are out and about. Sorry to hear about the neuro., and I'd ask the docs what to do for it.

I have a numb thigh from when they did my surgery, and I have a numb toe. The toe is from a nerve tumor. Numbness sounds like something that doesn't "feel", therefore shouldn't bother us, but that's just not the case, is it? I can't stand to touch the numb parts. It feels awful, kind of like after your face is numb from the dentist, and kind of like it's not your body part. It's uncomfortable.

My DH is up in Brooklyn, Park Slope to visit our DD and her DH this wk.end. Wish I were there too. Take care.

Hi broadway fan!
Are you still on chemo? Carbo and taxol?
Definitely tell you doc about this- they may want to readjust your chemo doses.
I am currently having chemo- last one next week. I haven't had any symptoms (yet) but I decided to take B complex vitamins before chemo. B complex vitamins are key to repair/healthy nervous system. I've heard about the glutamine too- either way ask your doc if this would be ok/help you.
I understand that these symptoms will go away in time... although I am sure it is very annoying to wait when you feel this way!
Take care.

My oncologist keeps saying that the only thing that helps this is time.
I finished chemo in August, and my neuropathy is as bad as ever.

I hope yours soon goes away - it seems to affect everyone differently.

s Broadwayfan

Sorry to hear you are having to deal with the dreaded neuropathy.

I am one of those that it affected pretty hard. Mine started with about my 3rd chemo of carbo/taxol. That would have been around the first of September of 04. Here it is October of 05 and it is still here! Yipes!

Heres my regimen:

1. Neurontin (300mg. 3x day) prescribed by oncologist
2. A good B-12 complex daily. I use the sublingual ones from the health food store.
3. L-Glutamine from GNC 3x a day. I prefer the gel caps vs. the powder.
4. I also get a 3cc injection of B-12 every 2 - 3 weeks from my GP.
5. I bought some diabetic-neuropathy socks (verdict is still out in these)

Anyways, I've tried just about everything and have finally settled on the above.

I know it's not fun to deal with. I try to think of it as a very small price to pay for my dance with NED.

Hi Girls,
I also suffered from neuropathy from my chemo. It always went away a day or two after my treatment. Funny thing was when I was done with my chemo in April, it came back in my fingers and feet worse. My Doctors a;so stated time is the cure. I am fine from it now after 6 months. Hang in there!!!
